I have managed to solve the problem of loading a new map on my Go700 using a Mac. I discovered that Tomtom is incompatible with the Leopad operaying system, despite the protestations of the idiots at Tomtom ,so I reverted to an older Mac using Tiger.
Taking the instructions given to crinold, I tried to erase the disc on the 700 using home 1.5 - and it didn't work. So I went to disc utilities, highlighted and erased the Tomtom disc, and opened home 2,5. After being refused entry several times, like being told to load an already loaded device, I persevered, and managed, slowly, to add the map I had bought for 78 euros. T]One point oif interes is that when I bought the map, they site stated it would cost 63 pounds sterling, but switched it to euros when the invoice arrived. at a rate very favourable to Tomtom - funny, that.
This is sharp practice,probably illegal in many countries,, but, to be honest, dealing with the mysterious Tomtom company is so frustrating, that I don't have the time or inclination to fight them for the money they cheated from me.
How they survive with such an awful product and extremely bad after sales service is hard to understand - perhaps they won't ... we live in hope.

Could be a loose contact at the connection between the wire and at the gps unit.

Think the green light must be on at the charger port and also on the gps unit.

This green light can be found near the power button on the gps unit.

Hi, I am back, just got the problem solved, I called their tech support at no charge (866-486-6866, Glen) , really good service.
First turn your firewall off (if you have one). You need to go into your 720 with the TomTom Home software and erase the downloaded software (with the remove items from my device) and reset the device (little reset button under the unit keep it pressed for 5 seconds), place it back in the cradle and restart your computer and than restart the 720 , bring the TomTom Home program up, and when the TomTom Home software in your computer restarts and detects the 720 it will tell you that you need to update the application, if it doesn't than you force the update by going to the add maps option, select items on my computer, select applications and press the add button, when done, go back and to device (option in top of your screen) and select disconnect device, restart your 720 and it should be back to life with the upgraded software.

I had the same problem and solved by accident:
use Tomtom Home>>Operate my device, beneth the simulated screen there is an option to "set current position", click it and manage to configure voice selection, choose any and go back.
unplug your tomtom and it should be working again

I had the same problem with my GO 700. It turned out to be the flexi-connector that connects the hard rive to the main circuit board. If you take the cover off and then remove the two screw holding the speaker in place you can see the flexi-conector and whether it is connected properly or not. It is a bit tricky to get it back in if that is the problem, but with a little patience it is possible.

If you're under warranty though doing this will void it.

What I can suggest is download the drivers & software first .. Than buy another brand of memory card.. I had same issue with a Mp3 player that I had purchased.. It wouldnt recognise the card even though it was setup properly.. I returned it and baught a different brand.. Worked Like a Charm..

#2 If you for some reason cant get the software to install or work properly, I suggest you buy a new Tom Tom (( EXACT MODEL )) and than take the old Tom Tom put it in the new box and take it back with your receipt and tell them this doesnt work.. Ive done that b4 with a Speaker system and it wasnt an issue with the store...

Connect it to your computer (green light should be on) and hold down the power button for at least 15 seconds to reset it. Let go of the power button once the device reboots. Run HOME (www.tomtom.com/home) and download/install any updates that it finds. 

U need just one original file from zour tomtom and that is ttgo.bif so keep that file safe and copy everything from working unit (even better with patched system) to your unit, !!!!! dont use TomTom Home !!!! just through drive (if its not there cant help), just possible that u need now maps activated for your unit, u can find info how to this anywhere,

A friend of mine had a similar problem it was the battery and it was killed took it back to shop and got a new one it was 4 months old.

go to preferences map data,change map,if there is no maps to change you have a lemon!

First make sure you have a backup of your NEW ONE XL. You should be able to connect your XL to your PC using USB but not use TomTom home software. Your TomTom should appear in "my computer" as a drive . OR , put the SD card in a USB reader connected to a PC , that way you can look at and copy from or to the SD card.
You should be able to copy the map you have to the SD card directly ( if there is enough room on it ) , if theres not enough room , get a new bigger card , copy all the backup files you already have on your PC + the map you want. You might / should be then able to activate that map in the XL using the codes you say you have for the maps. if you try to do this using TomTom home it might have some restiction to stop you activating the required map but hopefully you should be able to do it manually as described above rather than use TomTom home. ... Dont leave sat nav in car as it kills battery,try removing memo card if installed hold in reset button few seconds ,reinstall card if fitted and try boot up

press the reset button on the bottom of the tomtoim with a paperclip and check you have the latest version of the software on the website to avoid problems in the future

The 730, unlike the 930, doesn't come with European maps preloaded. You can find the most up to date Tele Atlas maps of the UK & Europe over at TomTom's Map Store.

reset the device by pushing the reset button near the plug on the bottom of the unit , then it will come on i presume you upgraded by the internet you need to use a paper clip to reset the unit
