Tomtom GO 700 GPS Receiver - Page 9 Questions & Answers
No maps found
HI,
1. Connect to your PC via the USB cable. Turn on the ONE LE. Select Yes to connect to your computer.
2. If TomTom Home is running, Exit. Your unit will still be connected
as a USB device. (When I say Exit, I mean to be sure the program is not
running in the System Tray of the lower right corner of your screen. If
it is, right-click and choose Exit).
3. Open My Computer or Windows Explorer. Look for the mapped drive
which is your TomTom. In my case, it is Drive letter I:. It will also
likely have a red TomTom icon. (Make note of the drive letter for later)
4. Right-click on this drive and choose Properties. Choose the Tools
Tab on the pop up window. The first section is Error-checking (in
Windows XP). Click the "Check Now..." button.
In the next pop-up, check-mark "Automatically fix file-system errors",
and then click the "Start" button. Wait for this to complete. It may or
may not tell you that it fixed something.
When this is finished, close all the popup windows, and also close My Computer (or Windows Explorer).
5. In the System Tray (low-right), look for the Safely Remove Hardware
icon. In Windows XP, it looks like a left-pointing green arrow above a
gray rectangle. You may have to expand the System Tray with the
<< arrow to see this. Click it one time. Select the TomTom device
by the drive letter when(it says "Safely remove USB mass storage device - drive I:.
Once it says it is Safe to Remove, then disconnect your TomTom.
6. Turn off your TomTom. With the end of a paper clip or similar
(safety pin), press down on the recessed Reset button on the bottom of
your TomTom. It's a little hole just big enough for the paper clip
point. You should be able to feel the "click" when you press down.
7. Turn on your TomTom. Give it time to start up. The "No Maps Found" problem will hopefully be gone for you

Have you pressed the reset button which is worked by pressing the arrow to the right of the on/off button? It worked for me.
I can't figure out how
You have to download TomTom home, plug your device in via a USB device and TomTom home will start up. You can then download and update your files..
Make sure Tom Tom Home has finished updating your device before you unplug it or you will corrupt the device and render it useless..

Tomtom 720 standby
What you report is very very common. It's also common with other electronic stuff with similar type batteries. I ahve a portable DVD that charges OK 100% and will run for hours after a full charge but If I( charge it , then leave it for a day , the battery has gone flat or nearly flat . Doesnt present any problem or appear to do harm to the battery as it's been like this for about 2 years now. It's just inconvenient , thats all.
My Tomtom is the same , so I did a little modification . I used a read switch ( very tiny ) and broke into the battery cable inside the tomtom and connected the 2 resulting ends to the read switch then positioned the read switch at the back of the tomtom so it would be near to the tomtom mount when affixed . I then glued a small magnet onto the tomtom mount. The result is : The battery inside the tomtom is made disconnected when the read switch opens and it opens when its taken off the mount because it needs the magnet to be closed. ie . the read switch closed when a magnet is put near it and opens when a magnet is removed ( read switch is magneticly operated ). So now my battery doesnt drain as it has no connection to it to drain through. The tomtom will only switch on when its slotted onto it's mount . good luck.
Formatting a tomtom go 710
Hi, I probably cant answer all of your questions but I might help with some of them. You should be able to access your TomTom 710 without removing TomTom home software from your PC. It should be accesses as a drive through the USB connection in "my computer" on your PC. When a USB device is connected to your PC it appears as an external drive. Therefore you should be able to delete , load onto , or format the TomTom hard drive ( or with some other models the SD card ) as you would a normal drive . ( an example of this is where you might have a camer with SD memory card and relevant manufacturers software on your PC . you might connect your camera to the PC via USB and the camera software on your PC automaticly detects the camera for it to eb accesssed . However , the camera and it's SD card can also be accessed seperatly by going to "MY Compter" and it should also be visible there as an external UDB device / external drive ) . Now .. to another another question . If you do un-install TomTom home , I dont think it will also delete any backup of your TomTom , it will only delete TomTom Home software . ( the word "think" is mentioned because I have never tried this ). Besides that , you can choose in tomtom home , where you want any backups to reside , so you could save backups via TomTom home to a CD for istance. If you did that , then you would have the backup on a CD rather than your harddrive which means you could safely un-install TomTom home knowing that if it also removed any saved backup you would still have the CD with a backup on it. So , to summerise.... If it were me , I would make a backup of the TomTom by simply copying all the files on it by opening the TomTom up as a folder in "MY Computer" , simply drag any files and folders from the TomTom into a folder I have prepaired ( call it for instance "my tomtom backup" ) on my PC . Then I would format the TomTom drive then reinstall the backup and see what happens. If the TomTom still doesnt work properly , I would Format the tomtom again then use TomTom home to obtain all relivant files , then copy only the maps and .MAC files ( these are the authorisation files for the maps ) from my Backup to the TomTom manually ( not from tomtom home ). I would guess that would result in a working TomTom again ... Good luck.

I am STILL trying to download the latest Wester Europe Maps to my Go 700. But I have found this answer to your question. Any tips on how I down load the v7.20 to my TomTom? good luck.
When navigating to a location in the UK or The Netherlands you should be able to enter full digit postcodes.
If you are only able to enter 4 digits, follow the instructions below.
- Download the file below and save it to your computer.
wezipcodes715.zip (10.5 MB)
- Extract the contents of the downloaded file to your desktop (on PC right-click the downloaded file and select Extract to).
You will now have a folder called 'zip' on your desktop.
- Connect your TomTom device to your computer.
- If you are using a PC click Start > My Computer and double-click the icon for your TomTom device.
If you are using a Mac click the icon for your TomTom device on your desktop.
- Copy the complete 'zip' folder to your TomTom device.
Note: The 'zip' folder should be copied to the 'root' of your TomTom device. This means not inside one of the folders.

After you say yes to conect to the computer and the screen goes black - jut re-press the on button on the GPS while it is still connected to the computer - it will then work. I also try to open the GPS as an external drive which forces the identification of files while TomTom home is working.

Recently after working one day
Try giving it a full charge. I used different model Tom Tom that would not turn on even if plugged in until after the battery was recharged.

I'm not sure that would help at all. An external antenna is useful if you are inside a vehicle to get around the signal being blocked if your gps is inside but from the sounds of your description, you are being blocked by the buildings. What you need is line of sight to the satellites so the gps can triangulate your location. The more satellites it can see, the better. If it cannot locate at least 3, it will not work.

you might want to try:
-- plug to the electrical charger, reset for 15+ secs
-- connect to the computer, download Tomtom app and try updating the application
I had a 2006 purchased go 700 and did the above and it is working much better with latest application.
