Meade ETX-80AT-TC Telescope Questions & Answers
The vertical lock to move
If you will go to the Mighty ETYX web site-- there will be several dis-assembly instructions there with pictures. I am NOT aware of a "spring" being anywhere inside an ETX80 telescope. Are you sure the knob --- bolt head has not broken loose?
Here is the web site:

Can't see anything through the viewfinder, only
There is a small mirror in the back with a knob there that you turn-- one way is for the rear port view the other way if for the top eyepiece view.
Here is the manual--

Are you using FRESH batteries? Did you do a Calibrate Motors?
If new batteries and a Calibrate motors does NOT fix it, then something mechanical is broke inside the base of the telescope. Meade can repair these:

ETX-80 hand controller say's "Self Check Failed"
You may need to reload the firmware by following these instructions for Safe Load:
From the Autostar 2.0 README file: "SAFE LOADER MODE IN YOUR Autostar:
If the firmware in your Autostar crashes and you cannot access the
"DOWNLOAD" menu item on your handbox, you can use the "SAFE LOADER"
feature of your new Autostar software (version release 1.1G and above).
To get into the safe loader, follow these simple steps:
1. Make sure the Autostar and ETX are turned off.
2. Press and hold the "ENTER" key and the Scroll Down Key located to the right of the help key on the Autostar handbox.
3. While depressing both keys, turn on your Autostar power switch. This will require you using both hands.
You should see "FLASH LOAD READY" on your display. This indicates that
you can proceed to Update new software to your Autostar."
This is for the 497 controller. There is NO safe load for the 494 controller.

Basically i have just brought this meade ETX80 AT
Go to this web site and download a manual:
http://www.meade.com/manuals/TelescopeManuals/ETXtelescopes/ETX-80AT.pdf
Put the eyepiece with the largest number written on it into the telescope. Go outside during the day time and practice focusing on a distant object.
Stellar objects are VERY tiny. They will NEVER be "staring me in the eyes". Read my frequently asked questions TIP on my profile page.

Hand controller buttons not responsive
Eventually the pads wear out. There are repair kits you can buy to repair the contacts. Here:

or you can buy another new keypad from Meade.

Flip mirror stuck
It is possible to repair but a major pain if you don't know the overall design.

The telescope doesnt go up it goes down
I assume you are using the 497 hand controller? Planets will always be a little bit OFF since their orbits are calculated. You should be able to see Venus, Jupiter, and Saturn as a disk-- the other planets are very tiny and can be mistaken for a star.
Use the Automatic alignment feature and center the brightest nearest star. It will not be in the eyepiece. Be sure you calibrate motors, and train the drives, and the time, and date and site are accurate.
