An E16 error code means there is a heater insulation problem which could cause the tripping of your fuse box and other random cycle errors, but it's hard to prove without the replacement of your heater. You'll need to tilt it or remove the back or pop the top to see where the leak is coming from. Unplug it first. I had my water pump crack and leaked. It was a plastic part not related to freezing though, and it only leaked when it ran a cycle. Perhaps your leak is prior to the water pump.

Was the burning a burned rubber smell? Maybe its your belt. either off track or worn down and motor is spinning but the belt is not turning. Just something to check.
