Vantec NexStar-3 External 3.5inch SATA&USB2.0 Hard Drive Enclosure (Black) (NEWITEM58149860) Drive Case Questions & Answers
Last week my nexstar 3 external TB hard drive took
All is not lost! (although that drive is most likely a goner...)
Modern hard drives take a beating better than their older counterparts, though they remain semi-fragile devices that rely on super precise internal balancing and magnetics. You're right that it's most in jeopardy when writing, but the sound you're describing indicates that it's read/write heads can't align themselves correctly.
The bad news is there's no way for you to remedy this without a state of the art clean lab and the precision tools to re-manufacture, or simply realign as the case may be, this hard drive.
The good news is most hard drive manufacturers offer a data recovery service for their hardware, so you can send your drive in and get back a fixed one complete with your old data. Even if you're out of service I'd call regardless as most are happy to sell you into recovery work.
If you find that it's a dead end, don't despair. Do an internet search for 'data recovery hard drives' in your local area and you may be pleasantly surprised. Many Data-smith companies exist these days for the sole purpose of recovering data that was lost to a drive crash.
Best of luck!

NexStar CX USB 2.0
This is the usual reason:USB port has 4 pins (connectors). The two at the ends supply 5 Volts to the hard drive (or any other appliance you connect. I don't think there's a problem with those two because you can see the power light on the hard drive. The middle is for data transfer. If one gets damaged, although the device gets power, the OS cannot recognize the device.Try changing the USB cable you are using. Connectors in the wire are damaged more easily than those in the device.
I have a Nexstar 3 external 3.5 hard drive and it
Hello
Okay , so there are some steps to figure out what is wrong with your external.
Firstly , if your computer makes a sound when you plug in your external ,
go to Start-Control Panel-Administrative Tools-Computer Management-Disk
Management , and see if your external drive is listed here with your
local drives. If it is listed , right click on the drive and change the
drive letter to make it appear in "my computer".
If your drive does not make a connection sound when connecting to your
computer and also does not show up , please follow the next step.
Remove the hard drive from the casing if possible and install it in your
computer case or another external case.If the drive works , the problem
is with the casing and you can ignore the drive.
Now , if the problem is with the casing , there are still 3 possibilities.
- The USB cable between the drive and the computer may be damaged.
- The circuit board which connects your drive to the interface of the external may be blown.
- The power supply (if applicable) may have a blown transformer.
The
latter is the easiest to diagnose , does your external light up at all
when you plug in the power? If not , then this is probably your problem.
On the bottom of the adapter is a label which you will be able to use
to have a new adapter made at your local electronics shop and this will
cost about $30 max. They will also be able to test the adapter with a
clamp meter to see if this is really the problem and this should be
free.
The second component you want to test is the USB cable. If
you have a printer , swop out the cables and see if your printer
functions normally. Most externals use the same connector so you should
be able to test it in this manner. If the cable works go on to the last
step. If the cable is defective , replace it with a new one which you
can find for about $10 at most electronics and chain stores.
The
last component to test is the circuit board. This is a bit of a grey
zone as you probably won't be able to spot the blown component unless it
failed really badly. With the casing already opened , locate the
external's circuit board and check to see if you have any blackened
components or fluids leaking from some components. If all the other
components of the external worked perfectly , then this is the faulty
part. It is not really economical to replace the circuit as most of the
time it is out of production by the time you need to replace it and it
still costs a lot even if it is available so if your drive is working
perfectly when connected via sata or IDE on your computer , the best is
to buy a new casing and place your old drive in the new casing.
A casing costs about $50 and you could get it at most tech shops and big chain stores like Best Buy.
I hope this solves your problem and please reply if you need more help.
Kind Regards
Andrea
I have a NexStar 3 external hard drive that is not

Windows 7 NexStar drivers and installation needed
No device-drivers are needed. Just connect this USB device, and Windows will recognize it. If there is a "one-touch-backup" button, it won't work, but you can still use drag-and-drop to copy files from your internal disk-drive to this external disk-drive.
Hello there , my pc is not reading the external
Does the external drive have its own power supply and, if so, did you make sure it's turned on?
Are you connecting it to a USB port?-Try another device in the same port to make sure THAT port works correctly.
Maybe the device requires it's own drivers-did the device come with an installation cd?
Are you using a version of windows(which one) or is it a Mac?
Try and see if you get the same results by hooking it up to a different computer.
Hope this helps!
Hi there.i have a problem.hope
Try a replacement USB cable first, and test the external disk on a different computer, to ensure the fault is on the external storage unit.
Try also unplugging computer power cord for ten minutes, and restarting. If you use a laptop also remove battery to drain power. Disconnect as well Hard disk power adapter , and restart everything connecting the disk to a different USB.
Also test the disk on a different computer to ensure it is not the computer USB.
If this happened after a power surge, then the problem is most likely a faulty controller board.
If instead you have dropped the hard disk it is possible an hard drive failure, in that case repair will be expensive.
There are two possibilities:
The USB/ATA controller board is faulty.
In this case you can simply take apart the enclosure and mount the disk into a new enclosure. The model you indicated is SATA, but double check the hard disk connector to ensure.
The hard disk inside is faulty (physical damage).
In this case repair may be expensive. You need to locate a data recovery facility with a 'clean room' , the cost is usually more than $800.
The controller board inside the external disk caddy is faulty.
In this case the disk may be removed from caddy and mounted on a different SATA enclosure.
A replacement enclosure will stfrom art about $20 on Ebay or Amazon, just ensure it is SATA 3.5 inch (2.5 is laptop HDD ).
