Most likely cause is that the handle needs to be full upright to engage the attachment hose. If it's tipped backward, like you'd have it when doing vacuuming with the bottom unit, it's shut off. You may also want to move the handle to full upright and then back to deeply angled backward a few times in event that the mechanism is stuck or sticky. Good luck!

I've never seen a Dyson with a "medal". For that matter, I've never seen a Dyson with any metal parts either, except the screws. You should take it to a qualified vacuum repair shop to make sure the parts aren't necessary before running it again, just in case.
