Am I understanding this right, the light in the living room, like ceiling light or a light hooked to an outlet flickers when you try to turn the TV on?

looks like you have a problem with the crt itself poss a fractured shadowmask the convergance system only changes the magnetic field in the scan coils to realign the cathode guns to keep the scanning in line . coincidental i think, a new crt is favorite hope this helps

CONVERGENCE PROBLEM. FIND HONEST TV TECH. MAYBE A $200-$300 REPAIR

one of two issues are possible here:Model indicated has a convergence circuit= colors are skewed or even 3d looking is convergence problem. Set has Akai name but is made by Samsung--if a convergence issue can be a do it yourself repair.I can explain what is needed if that is the problem (see some attached photos).The other issue seen is if on a black and white picture (color turned off) stand back and look at the screen= is it yellow looking or gray?If yellow looking the Glycol (a cooling fluid in each tube) is contaminated- usually in these sets the blue is first= no real blue leaves a yellow screen.Look at the photos and try to tell me which issue you have.

bueno tengo una television pt4298hd akai el problema no enciende parpadea el foco de timer 10 o 9 veces y no enciende destape la tapa de atras y desconecte un cable rojo que tiene el nombre de screm y la television enciende pero no se mira como debiera porque se mira el color verde y el rojo pero como si le faltara el color azul mi televisor es una dlp akai de tres lentes y quisiera saber cual es el problema

Here are the Instruction you can do to reset your tv.

1. Check the power connections first to rule out any problems there. Unplug the power cord from television and the cable, if applicable. Wait 10 seconds, re-plug and press the "Power" button on the remote control or television control panel. If your television is not repaired, go to the next step.
2. Reset the television. Press and hold down the "Power" button on the television control panel. Wait 10 seconds to reset the television. If your television is not repaired, go to the next step
3. Reset the television to its factory default settings. Press the "Menu" button on the television control panel or remote control.
4. Highlight "Installation," press "Enter" and open the "System Status" menu.
   
5. Highlight "System Information" and press "Enter"
   
6. Press the either "" arrow and then press "Factory Defaults" when it appears.
   
7. Enter your four-digit "PIN code" or enter "0000" as your "PIN code" if you did not set it previously.
   
8. Highlight the "Yes" option and then press "Enter." Wait until the television turns off -- about 10 seconds -- and then unplug the television power cord.
   
9. Plug in the television power cord to complete the default factory setting process.

If it is simply a matter of the colors not lining up it may just need the convergence adjusted, but if one color is missing altogether (sounds like maybe blue is gone) one of the CRTs might be faulty. If this is the case then it will be more expensive to fix than it is worth. Even though Akai made high quality audio products in the 70s and continues to make quality recording anf musical equipment the fact is that their TVs are very low quality I am afraid.

Projection TV sets have two very common problems. One is convergence ( 3D/Warped video) the other is CRT fluid ( Dull Video). Below are more details for both items. Also, complete repair kits with instructions and repair support are avail from site such as www.TvRepairKits.com

Common Problem #1) Convergence has gone out

Projection TV sets need to have all three colors - RED - BLUE - GREEN - lined up correctly on the screen in order for the video to look normal. When its out of alignment the video will look 3D, wavy, distorted, etc. Most of the time you just need to adjust your convergence in the TV menu. If you cannot adjust it in the menu - then your convergence is broken and needs to be repaired.

This is a very common failure on these projection sets and a fairly simple DIY fix. All projection sets including Samsung, RCA, Sony, Philip Magnavox, Panasonic, Pioneer, Akai, GE, JVC, Toshiba, and others at some point will have the same problem.

Common Symptoms include....

• Screen looks 3D
• Colors don't line up
• One or more colors can't be adjusted when using the convergence menu.
• Screen is bowed or warped.
• TV shuts off after powering on. Power light will blink. TV may also make a chirping noise.

Common Problem #2) CRT Fluid is Cloudy

Projection TV tubes have a liquid coolant that is used to keep them from overheating. After many years the coolant in the blue and green tubes will become cloudy and cause the screen to look dull, red/orange, etc. You may even see halos around images.

The power supply board is dead, do you know basic electronics' and soldering? Most of the times, the power supply board just have dead leakages gases capacitors.These capacitors always bulges up on it top,or puff up on it top.Replaced these gases leakages capacitors will get your TV power stable,and work again.Or tries websites like Shopjimmy.com,Ebay.com to buy a whole refurbish power supply board for the replacement.

This indicates a fault on the Power Supply.

Do you have the technical ability and equipment to open the unit and look at replacing PCB components that could have failed?
