I would get in touch with a washing machine repair person as I believe what you may have either a bearing disintegrating or the spider, the contraption that holds your drum horizontal and allows it to spin,may be corroding. It's called a spider, it's aluminum, and it's got only three legs but when those legs break, the plastic drum and other expensive things often suffer damage as well. We had this experience this spring with an Inglis washer which is a sister set to the Whirlpool Duet. If the spider is corroding or a bearing is going, and changed before it breaks, it will likely save you about $600 on your repair bill. Remember to compare any repair cost against the cost of a new unit including the age difference. Washing machines only last 7-10 years now... they just aren't built like they used to be.

Unpluggin the machine is pretty much the only way to reset it.Leave it unplugged for a couple hours if that doesnt work its most like a control board issue

Jim, This could be the belt on the drum has broken or come off. It may also be the door latch switch is loose or broken.

Water up to door level means your motor and motor control unit (MCU) was covered with water. Most likely your Motor control unit (MCU) is damaged rather than Central Control Unit (CCU). Listen, you have to buy a new machine. If you end up putting CCU and MCU both into a soaked wash motor washing machine, you will be so mad with yourself. Time to go to Home Depot looking for a new machine. You use that flooded machine then all your washing machine warranty and liabilities from the manufacturer is out of the door. Even your home insurance may not honor if you knowningly use a flooded machine and something goes wrong.

Sounds like a valve isn't closing properly. I would suggest you call for service.

there either is a rust mark on the tub or under the agitator oil could be leaking out or metal is rotting where the tranny shaft comes up under the agitator but like you said it's old and parts are starting to rust out and decay
