Do I understand the write speed in a notebook is slow?
The main reasons I can think of that slow down a write is mostly lack of memory either RAM or free hard drive space (an image is formed on the drive to be written to disc unless its "on the fly" (direct disc copy).
That notebook may have a very older limited chipsets and CPU's which are not fast as other versions so moves at a speed it can cope with.
Notebooks are by definition lesser laptops, which tend to be fitted with older slower parts to be able to be sold at much lower prices.
Now if this notebook has XP and 1.5Gb of RAM my first thought is to increase this to 2Gb if it can support it, memory is cheap for older machines on ebay etc.
XP can use a fair chunk of memory if it has antivirus etc loaded with several Gb of swap file on the hard drive so takes time to move things around, needing more faster memory
I would check it has no virus or malware problem that can slow things down malwarebytes is good for the malware and is free.
Then I would look at how much free space there is on its hard drive because if this is small, say less than 25% then this will cause problems and may need a larger one.
Run scan/checkdisk followed by defragmenting to sort out any file problems that may bother XP so tidy things up make files easier to find.
Lastly in the systems folder locate the performance option and select maximum which will turn off all XP's "bells and whistles" to become a blander but faster system.
Hope this helps........

Dont read DVD
Try to clean
the DVD drive lens with a Lens cleaner CD. These are available at your
local department stores such as Kmart. It looks like a CD but it has a
brush attached to it. Just insert the cleaning CD and let it cycle a couple of time and then remove it. If this does not work then your DVD laser could be going bad.

My GWA-4082N will read cd's only but will not read
if your drive can read cd's but not DVD's then you should be able to install XP with no problems, your drive is faulty and needs replacing. some drives will read 1 but not the other. could be cd or dvd, the best fastest and easyest thing to do is just replace the drive and don't waist your time trying to fix it. for the cost of $40 to $60 just replace it
