Lost the piece that fits over the lens, won't start the dvd.
Possible that the optical head is damaged and so might need a replacement. If the piece you mentioned has come off the optical unit then the unit is damaged and will not read or pass on information to the processor to run the disc..

Put a DVD in and
First thing first, before you put a DVD wipe it with a clean cloth just to eliminate those little dirt then try to play it, if still won't work there still other way to solve it, because it might be that your DVD player's lens is a little dirty, don't worry you can buy a DVD cleaner near your town.
After doing all the possible solution then the issue persist, I would strongly suggest to contact the Manufacturer for the further assistance.

No disc saying for a insignia is-pd040922 help
Hi boydjohn78,
If you have necessary tools and test instruments,
know safety precaution in basic troubleshooting try the steps below to solve
your problem.
Assuming that the disc is good.
1.Clean the lens. -
Sometimes because of dust the lens can't read any disc. Try clean the lens by
soft cotton buds. Be careful while doing this.
2.Replace the ribbon - Check
the ribbon connected to the lens from the main board for scratch,
damage. Once it has an open line then of course the lens can't read the
disc. Also try to erase the contact by pencil eraser. If you've done the steps
above and the symptoms still there then the next step requires you a little
knowledge in soldering technique and reading the ohmmeter.
3.Check the motor - Check
the motor that spin the disc with an ohmmeter. You can test it using the
ohmmeter (x1) even it is connected on the lens assembly.Good motor - reading
should be fairly high and it will spin. Bad
motor- reading will drop to low resistance and will not spin. You may visit this link http://www.fixya.com/support/r7833671-change_defective_motor_portable_dvd for more info.
Hint : 50% of my
repaired unit the above parts are commonly caused of the problem.
If you confirmed that you have a defective motor
then replace it with a new one. Before replacing the new motor you have to
check the clearance of the disc holder with the old one. The clearance should
be the same as the old because if not the lens will not read the disc if it is
too far or too close.
Ifyou already cleaned the lens, and confirmed
that the ribbon is good as well as the motor then I would advice you to send it
to repair shop because the next step should be done with an expert because it is quite
technical diagnosing the fault between the pick-up lens and the main board.
Hope I helped you.
Have a nice day!
Thanks for using Fixya.

I'm wondering how to charge the battery. but don't
Hi, if you have the cig lighter adaptor then this should just plug into the back or side of the player, the problem is if you have had this player for a while or you have got in second hand then this might mean the battery is no good as they tend to only hold their charge for up to 3 months any time after this the battery either wont hold a charge or it will only last a few minutes before it cuts out, the car charger should charge it as normal and it will either plug into the back or side of the player and this will then charge it up as long as the car is running, it will at least let you watch it any way but only if the engine is running, the chances are if you plut the cig lighter into it and it dont seem to hold the charge then this means hte battery is scrap and a new one will be needed,
if you use google and type in battery then give make and model after and press search that should list loads of sites that sell the battery you need.
now as for a charger, if you have a radio shack near to you or a maplin or even an electric repair store, if you take the player into one of them shops they will be able to check what watt and amp charger you need, they sell universal ones that come with loads of fittings and you just choose the voltage on the charger to set it up to charge your device, these adaptors are less expensive then trying to buy an original charger for it as they would probably cost as much as the dvd player itself.
your cig lighter charger should charge it as long as it fits into the adaptor on the player, now some players have to sockets one is for charging the battery and the other is for watching it whilst plugged in, not all players have this but both the sockets would be next to each other and it should tell you its charging when you have it in the right socket, if it only has one socket then thats the one you use, but if it dont charge then this means the battery is no good and needs replacing, you can still watch it as long as its plugged in.
the battery life on a player like this is about 3 months the same as a laptop or netbook, most people take the battery out if their watching it whilst its plugged in as these saves the battery and keeps it lasting longer but some battery's are not easy to take out so this is not possible on all players
let me know how you get on or if you need further assistance ok

How long does it take
It would usually affect it immediately if it was going to affect it at all. If you spilled something on your DVD player the best thing to do is to just leave it powered off for at least a good 12 hours to let it completely dry out. Do not try turning it on when it is wet. If it is left off and allowed to dry there is a good chance it will not harm the unit in any way.
But if it has not affected it yet, it will not affect the player.
Please make sure you rate my answer 4 thumbs up, it is extremely important to me. I would be forever grateful if you could do so. If you need more help on this question please just respond to my answer here and I will get right back to you.
Thanks
Tim

Portable dvd player broken
You can get a cdrom cleaner kit and try that which may work. If that doesn't work you're stuck replacing it as the repair would cost more than the unit.
