Maytag neptune dryer won't start

My Maytag Neptune Dryer won't start. The timer screen says 8.8. I have tried unplugging it and pressing off and on and all of the buttons. It won't work. I have looked in the manual and done everything it says. The dryer is 5 years old. But the washing machine works fine. This has happened before but it started working again. What whould i do?

Just a quick question before I look at the control board myself. What are the values/ratings for the capacitor and resistor (ex. farads for cap, ohms for resistor, and volts/amps for both)? Or give me the Vender Part Number so I can look this information up. Thanks!

loud noise

How do you remove the top of a magtag neptune dryer. Mine started making a loud squealing noise, that might be the belt. I do not want to force the top apart and damage something. Are there just clips that hold the top on or screws I do not see.

thanks

First, UNPLUG YOUR DRYER! Now open the dryer door and remove the 2 screws at the door hinges... remove the door and set aside, then remove the 2 screws opposite the hinges. Grasp the front panel near the top, just below the top panel and pull it toward you... do this on both sides. Tilt the panel forward then lift it off of the lower clips.

With the front panel gone, you'll see a 5/16" screw just below the top panel on both sides, top left and right. Remove these and the clips too... now you can lift the top panel like the hood of your car.

To gain further access, remove the 6 (3 on each side) screws holding the front drum support/blower vent panel, then set this aside.

If you want to remove the drum... first, take a flashlight and look closely at how the belt is routed around the idler pulley and the motor shaft. (You'll have to re-route it for reassembly.) Reach in there with both hands, with one hand rotate the spring loaded idler pulley back to release tension off the belt, then with the other hand remove the belt from the motor shaft. Now lift and pull the drum out the front of the cabinet.

Check to make sure the rollers in the back rotate freely. You can remove the rollers, buff the roller shafts with emery cloth, lube the shaft with light oil (like sewing machine oil) and reinstall the rollers. Lube the idler pulley also. Rotate the motor by hand and listen for the squeak you described.

Also check the front drum support panel you removed earlier. The drum rides on this as it rotates... As you are looking at the drum support from the drum side, inspect the 10 o'clock to the 2 o'clock area closely. If the glides (teflon) are worn it'll squeak when it rotates.

Hope this helps. Oh yeah! Almost forgot.... the belt won't squeak at all. It'll be the motor, rollers or drum glides.

You have to work from the front. Pull the top then the front then you will be able to see everything. Pretty self explanatory.

Maytag Electric Dryer - replace belt

I installed a new belt on a Maytag Electric Dryer. Everything seemed to work as described in the "fix it yourself" manual. However, the path of the belt doesn't seem right. The belt goes around the drum then around the motor spindle then over the idler pulley and then rests on a 1" wide metal bar. The bar provides tension on the belt.

I just bought the dryer two months ago and the belt already broke. I think the belt broke becuase of the metal piece it rubs on. See photo below.

I can't see an alternate path for the belt. Any tips would be appreciated.

The belt needs to be above the metal. Otherwise the repair looks good. Easy fix. Thanks for the pic.

Maytag Neptune Dryer MDE5500AYW beeping and resetting itself

My Dryer resets itself to the wrinkle release mode for 18 minutes regardless of what we set it for. During the 18 minute cycle, it beeps 4 - 6 times in quick succession. After the cycle ends, it will still occassionally beep a few times. Sometimes it will beep during the cycle, shut off and not allow us to restart it. We keep it unplugged most of the time now. There is nothing in the lint trap. We had a similar problem four years ago, but the dryer was still under waranty. They replaced the mother board, and it worked fine. I've called a service provider about replacing the mother board again and was quoted $391 for the job. Do you think that is the problem? Is there a less expensive way to fix it?

FIn inside neptune md55 dryer came loose need to remove side pane

The fin on the Neptune Dryer has come loose and I need to remove the side panel on the dryer to replace the two screws that hold one of the three fins in place. It would be simple if I knew exactly how to remove the panel.

I had the same problem but it's the FRONT Panel you need to remove. Before you start, unplug the thing first. BTW I did the whole proceedure in 10 minutes using an electric screwdiver / philips bit and a socket set with an 8mm socket with my leg in a cast. You can do better, I'm confident!

Two 8mm hex head bolts hold each fin on the drum. They can be tightened. You need to open the dryer front since they bolt from the outside of the drum. To open the dryer front you first take the door off by removing the two philips head screws, then slightly lift the door and pull toward you (the door hinges have little hooks on the end that inserts into the slots (this little design keeps the door from falling off during removal and install-nice). Then remove the two philips screws on the other side of the door opening (opposite the door hinges). These screws hold two plastic brackets (be sure to see how they are aligned before you remove them so you know how they go back on.

Now the front frame panel looks like an "H" . Grab the top two arms of the 'H" and give a quick ****. The top arms of the 'H" will come loose. The bottom part is held by a couple of clips, just pull up and the front panel comes off.

You will be able to spin the drum until the hex bolts for the fin(s) in question are visable / reachable from the right side (just above the heater unit-hope you unplugged the dryer earlier). I tightened it using an 8 mm socket.

Now reverse your steps: put the front panel back on the bottom clips and snap the top "H" arms back in place. Reinstall the plastic clips / screws and then put the door back on.

Maytag Neptune Dryer smells like burning rubber or plastic...

My Maytag Neptune Dryer electric dryer seems to work fine with one important exception -- whenever I run it, the laundry room fills with the strong smell of burning rubber or plastic. I do not see actual smoke. The vents are all clear. I'm afraid to run it anymore until I get it repaired. I'm pretty handy, but I've not ever cracked open an electric dryer. Thoughts? Clues? Questions? Help?

The drum belt could be rubbing on something inside. Does the dryer make a squeeking noise? Se if there are small rubber particles on the bottom, this will indicate a deteriating belt.

This noise will normally come from a defective idler pulley. Access to the idler pulley varies by model, if your dryer has a lower front panel (kick plate) start there. It should lift up and off or it may be held in place with a few screws or snaps; it may also have a catch at the edges or center gap between the kick panel and main panel. To release the catch, push a putty knife, wrapped with masking tape, into the gap and push back the catch. The next easiest access point is the rear panel. The rear access panel is held in place with several screws along the outer edges. The last resort method of access is the removal of the entire front panel. The front panel supports the front of the drum and so removal is more difficult. Front panel removal varies. In general, access is gained by lifting the top (remove the lint trap screws first), removing the screws that secure the front panel, and detaching the panel from the drum.
When reaching into the dryer be careful of sharp edges on the cabinet and interior supports. Reach in to the belt and give it tug. It should be taught and have only a little give. The belt should go under the idler pulley and over the motor pulley. Lift the idler pulley toward the motor to relieve tension on the belt and remove it from the motor pulley.
Turn the idler pulley wheel, it should turn smoothly, quietly and without any wobble. Inspect it for cracks or uneven wear. If the idler pulley does not maintain proper tension or is damaged it should be replaced. Depending upon your model, the entire assembly or just the wheel or bearing may be replaced. Check the bearings as well for excessive clearance also(roller bearings)
