How do I remove the Waste Ink Absober and do I

The waste ink pads are under the printer and cover the whole bottom of the case. You need to remove the scanner from the top, the side covers, the main case middle cover, unplug all cables from the logic board, lift the print engine up and out and replace the pads. After that you need the service mode to reset the counter if it runs after re assembly.

Problem says- check printer then 5100

Hi You can Try 2 things.

ERROR 5100 means that there is some foreign object blocking your cartridges carriage that disables it from moving. Generally when this happens, something has fallen into the printer, or a piece of paper has been jammed in there.

First step, remove the ink cartridge, and turn the printer upside down and gently shake it, see if anything comes out.

If nothing goes, or you can't hear anything rattling around, get a piece of cardstock paper (60lb or heavier) and gently push this through the printer, to see if it will help push out what might be stuck in there

Next try.

It may be a piece of paper or a scotch tape or a staple wire.
Solution 1:
Clean the timing strip.

Solution 2:
The purge cap (the white sliding mechanism that the print head parks to when it's not in use) may be not lubricated well enough .

Lubricate the sliders with some white grease (don't get it on the small wipers or the black caps); this repair probably require to remove the right panel off of the printer to gain access to the purge mechanism.

Please come back and just gave a vote, it will gave me some satisfaction to know am helping some one so I will keep on helping.

I have a major printer problem; in fact I'm now

Cleaning the cartridges or shaking them will not solve your problem. Your printer remembers the serial numbers encoded into the electronics of the cartridges you've used in it. If it sees the same code in a row it will kick out the cartridge. It is designed this way to kick out refills so you have to buy the expensive Canon ink. I own a Cartridge World store and it is my opinion that the Cartridge World you visited should have informed you of this problem. If I were you, I would break down and purchase a Canon original cartridge and see if it works. If it doesn't the first time, exchange it at the store for another new original cartridge and see if that fixes the problem. If not, it is likely there is something wrong with the printer. If you get one of the originals working I would think it would be safe to try a refill again (not a refill of YOUR cartridge but someone else's).

Canon Pixma MP170 waste ink abosorber is full.

That's a "normal" issue on Canon printers. Canon will change the absorber for free if your printer is still on Warranty. If it isn't they usually charge $10.

For toll-free technical support, please call Canon at 1 (800) 828-4040 during regular business hours (currently Monday-Friday 10:00 a.m. - 10:00 p.m. EST, excluding holidays).

Thanks

Had the message waste ink full. Dealer said it

Here is the link for the Canon website for your product. If you click on the support tab you can put in a question to help you resolve problems.

Here is what I found:

This printer has an ink absorber that takes in ink during the printing and print head cleaning processes. The cleaning process is necessary in order to keep the print head nozzles from becoming clogged. Over the life of the printer, the amount of ink that the ink absorber has absorbed is calculated by the printer.

Eventually, after substantial use, the printer will enter an error condition when the ink absorber is nearly full. At this point, printing is still possible.

Press the <Stop/Reset> button to cancel the error. You will still be able to print for a short period. To protect the printer from damage, you will not be able to print at all once the ink absorber is full.

Canon recommends having the printer serviced before the absorber becomes full. "We are aware that there are many "do-it-yourself" Web sites that offer instructions for making this repair. Replacing the ink absorber is a complicated and potentially messy procedure. Even if the ink absorber is successfully changed, the ink absorber counter must be reset. Be aware that if you attempt this procedure, it is at your own risk."

I have found out how to reset the counter :-

1) With the printer power turned off, while pressing the Resume/Cancel button, press and hold the Power button.
(DO NOT release the buttons. The Power LED lights in green to indicate that a function is selectable.)
2) While holding the Power button, release the Resume/Cancel button. (DO NOT release the Power button.)
3) While holding the Power button, press the Resume/Cancel button 2 times, and then release both the Power and Resume/Cancel buttons. (Each time the Resume/Cancel button is pressed, the Alarm and Power LEDs light alternately, Alarm in orange and Power in green, starting with Alarm LED.)
4) When the Power LED lights in green, press the Resume/Cancel button FOUR times
5) Press the Power button to turn the printer off.

This should reset the counter.

The replacement kit for the absorber is
Ink absorber kit (QY5-0146) I am still trying to ascertain exactly where the pad is located.

Hope that will help you.

The dealer was probably correct that it would be cheaper to buy a new printer - I just bought a 4 in 1 lexmark for $49 from a well known office equpment store!
