lads ye're all I work in an 'ink place' and the u051 fault is a fault indicating that the offending cartridge is electrically dead, this is caused by the clever little program in the canon machine that writes info to the cartridge to make it'dead' so it cant be re-used ! possible solution is to get refilled before printer thinks it empty !!

Hello.. my name is Scott and i have a problem with my printer .. it is a Canon MP170 and i have had it for about 12 months. the first time i replaced the INK with a non gen colour ink it came up with a error saying nged it and now it has a UNKNOWN Error on the Printer screen saying: U051 and BLK INK VOL UNKNOWN & COL INK VOL UNKNOWN.. I have a brand new gen canon black ink. if someone can give me steps to fix this problem that will be GREAT.. i was told there was a INK Reset button or something like that once you got new ink you are meant to press RESET or something i have no idea what that is meaning. please email me on [email protected] with helps for this ASAP! thank you very much Scott
Something that worked for me, I opened the Conon MX310. took out both cartridges, and for 10 seconds I held the Reset. put the cartridges back in, closed the lid, and again, for another 10 seconds held the reset. SLOW seconds. this reset, ink levels recognised,, and it's working as it should be.

Re; MP170 Canon printer U051 error showing / will not accept ink / will not print
Can you help with this problem. Many people are saying to reset the printer by holding down a button. I have tried them all.
Thanks
Marie
when the message appears, hold the reset button for about 5 seconds, this disables ink monitor on most canon models

how do you find the waste ink collector on a Canon scanner/printer Pixma MP170
What does the waste ink collector look like ?
Do you need to empty it or change for new one?
I had a message come up on computer screen saying it was nearly full.
Diane
Inkjet printers have a fibrous pad inside them that collects the waste
ink from cleaning the print head. Over time, this pad fills up with ink
and can no longer hold any more. When this occurs, the printer
indicates a "waste ink tank full" error.
The waste ink absorption pads are inside the printer, in the very bottom. They are usually soaked with ink when full and are very messy.
Replacing
the waste ink absorption pads is something an authorized canon service
facility can take care of for you.
