Hello,
I do not believe it is the belt. Their is a brake on the washer not that much unlike the brakes on your car,and 1 of 2 possible things are causing it not stop;
1) the brake lining is wore out and not holding and it needs to be replaced

2)the main tub pulley is hanging up and not engaging the brake as soon as a power is no longer send to the motor,as soon as motor stops rotating the brake is suppose to engage immedietly

to check which it is,is not to complicated, pull the washer out some from the wall and tilt it back so the control panel is resting on the wall and the bottom frame has been raised somewhat upward. remove the belt by grabbing it and while pulling down rotate it off of the main pulley and then turn the main center pulley in a clockwise direction a full 360 degree rotation, then while very carefully watching, turn it in a counterclockwise direction and see if it rises about a 1/2 inch then release it and it should move byitself back down. if it rises and drops back down it the pulley is good and the brake lining must be replaced, if no rise the pulley is what needs to be replaced.
oh i forgot to say remove the white plastic cover to see the rise/return of the pulley

Hello, Thank You for using FixYa. I will be helping you today. This unit spins in one direction for spin and the other for agitate. If its not agitating and the motor is running then the trans failed. Some of these have a ten year trans and labor warranty. Go to maytag site and put in your model and serial and check the warranty. And the brakes on this unit are pretty quick to stop.
Thank You and please rate my answer if it was helpful..

Hi from retired Englishman in SW France,

Check that the washer supply is OK using another item - a kettle for instance. If it's not check your breakers/fuses. Reset/replace if necessary and if the same thing happens, or if there was nothing wrong with the breakers/fuses in the first place, sorry but with such a fault it is virtually impossible for anybody on this forum to remotely guess what could be wrong with your washer. It could be internal wiring/plugs sockets, control panel switches, control PCB.

I fear that your only real option is a service call as the engineer will have the right equipment to safely diagnose what is wrong.
If this has assisted you please con
sider a 4 thumbs up for the rating.
Thanks and good luck!

Lid saftey switch may be faulty

Grease is a bad sign. Tranny is probably about shot - aside from your other problems. You may want to start pricing new machines.

Top loader so the belt is on the bottom of the washer, should be able to turn it over and take a panel off.

No the pump should and must have some water in it at all times if ALL water out the seal in it will burn up (water makes a excellent lubricant frreze it and it becomes very slippery)

Hello & Welcome to FixYa

When the washer fills but does not agitate or spin then you can check if the lid switch is fine. You can jump start the lid switch by connecting both the wires with each other or use the third wire to act as jumper between the two. After this if the problem is solved then replacing lid switch is recommended repair. Please get back to me if you have any other questions.

Hi,
When this model first came out the had this problem, on the back side of the lid toward the control panel they have a lid switch that seemed to sometime make contact and other times it would not. Simple test, raise and lower the lid, you should hear a click, if you hear nothing the lid switch should be replaced. I would suspect the the lid switch is your problem Part # 12001908, this part comes with a bar also that will also need to be replace. The part is located inside the control panel area and not difficult to replace.
Good Luck

Hi from retired Englishman in SW France,
I would gently suggest as a first step that you clean the drain motor/pump lint tray/filter. So many 'faults' are caused by blocked filters and many machines will not even go to rinse or spin or release the door lock if there is any water still left inside.
Here are my complete and generic guidance notes for checking both the drain motor filter and the drain motor ;-0)
If you are unsure where the filter is, it is often behind the front lower (kick) panel (or in some machines at the rear in an awkward position!). These panels are either held on by (plasic) screws or will just pull off. Most filters are held in by a round cover/knob. Sometimes the filter will not come out with the cover and you will have to persuade it to come out to play.

REMOVE POWER AND ENSURE YOU HAVE A WATER RECEPTACLE/RAGS TO SOAK UP THE WATER WHICH IS BOUND TO POUR OUT (alternatively use a wet vac as sensibly suggested by VinnyB1234!)
It's surprising what people have found in theirs! It is always worthwhile checking it on a regular basis.
Now- whilst the filter is removed it is normally possible to see the drain motor and ensure it is not jammed by a foreign object such as a needle or a toothpick. It should be able to be turned by hand/finger- the power IS OFF!
At this point it is also possible to test if the motor works. No clothes or water in the machine, select a spin cycle and put the power back on. You should be able to see the motor turning at some point, possibly straight away. Using something suitable like a glove see if it is easy to briefly slow the motor down. If it is easy then the motor is malfunctioning.

If this has assisted you please consider a 4 thumbs up for the rating.
Thanks and good luck!

Try to checked the motor because if something went wrong with the belt there's much more with the motor..There must be a short circuit on your motor..Coils might have been damaged due to overload..Try to check the motor and have it fixed

Hi from retired Englishman in SW France,

Most of my answers are to front load machines BUT- could the 'wetter clothes' be caused by water still being left in the machine? If so my general guidance notes could help!
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Sorry but I do not know your particular machine BUT I would suggest as a first step that you clean the drain motor lint tray/filter. So many 'faults' are caused by blocked filters. The motor is unable to drain all of the water in the allotted time.
If you are unsure where the filter is, it is often behind the front lower (kick) panel (or in some machines at the rear in an awkward position!) and held in by a round cover/knob.

REMOVE POWER AND ENSURE YOU HAVE A WATER RECEPTACLE/RAGS TO SOAK UP THE WATER WHICH IS BOUND TO POUR OUT!

At this point it is also possible to test if the motor works. No clothes or water in the machine, select a spin cycle and put the power back on. You should be able to see the motor turning at some point, possibly straight away. If it doesn't work then the motor is malfunctioning!

Hope the filter is the problem and good luck!

Thanks for choosing FixYa and welcome to the site. As you already know, that is the reason that it is doing it. You need to check the bottom legs of the washer and make sure none are damaged. Also, I would advise you to get a level tool. By doing this, you will know where the balance is off at. You can add wood slits under the legs to balance them off. Once it is level, you should be good to go.

i believe all you have to do is put your fingers underneath the bottom of the agitator and pull up and the whole agitator pops up to remove it out of the tub.

Number 3 is your lid switch. I would check that first. It is fairly easy to replace. Lift the lid and remove 2 screws. I have the service manual for you: See page 33

Hi from retired Englishman in SW France,

This is symptomatic of an intermittent water control valve- sometimes closes too soon (its physical fail position is closed) or sticks open too long.
It needs replacing! Service call ;-0(
Good luck,
