error code displayed on power
Error code 31:40 indicates a problem in the cameras tape transport system. This can be caused by several problems including the transmission gear in the tape mechanism not engaging properly, a defective clutch in the take-up spool or a faulty rotary mode switch. This will require disassembling the camera to repair and can be done fairly inexpensively. However, it's not really a user serviceable problem and should be repaired by a qualified service technician.

It may be a tape lubrication thing. Wet verses dry.
Some users swear by sticking to one brand.
Sometimes you can get drag or chatter when the lubes are mixed.
It may sort itself out, otherwise it's off to see the local Sony guy.
Cassette is in backwards, won't eject
Tape mechanism problems can be quite complicated but they can usually be repaired fairly inexpensively. However, it's not a user serviceable problem and will need to be diagnosed by a qualified service technician.

usually if a tape will NOT eject, it is the open/close motor, the drive to the motor or the Micro, that drives the driver, so to speak.
Sometimes it is a device called a "Mode Switch" if so this need to be replaced.
However working on a camera such as this is extremely difficult, due to the sophisticated electro-mechanical workings... often special tools are required to even take the unit apart.. but with that all said, if you have the right tools, the service manual, time &patience, and maybe a little luck, then there is no reason you shouldn't prevail. Intelligent Accessory Shoe
Sony does not currently make an input adapter for connecting external microphones to camcorders.
However, Sony manufactures a number of different external microphones for camcorder use that do not require an input adapter. Depending on your camcorder model, you may be able to find a compatible external microphone from the
Sony® Parts and Accessories Sales Center or
Sony Style Web site.
NOTE: Not all camcorders have an input jack or Active Interface Shoe for connecting an external microphone.

Sony's website says: "Some digital
camcorders must be setup to output a signal through the i.LINK® port
prior to being connected to a computer. Consult the instruction manual
of your camcorder for specific information before continuing with the
steps in this solution. Instruction manuals are available in the
Manuals/Specs/Warranty section of the Sony® eSupport Web site.
- Ensure the i.LINK cable is connected securely to the camcorder and computer.
- Ensure the camcorder is turned on and being powered by the supplied AC power adapter.
- Ensure the video capture card and software are configured properly to receive the i.LINK signal from the camcorder.
NOTES:
- Depending
on the video capture card and software you are using, you may need to
manually configure the capture card and software to receive a signal
from the i.LINK port. If applicable, check the Help files of the software or contact the video capture card or software manufacturer for further information.
- Sony®
digital camcorders are not provided with and do not require special
device drivers for i.LINK connectivity. The device drivers that allow
i.LINK connectivity should be provided with the video capture software.
If the software you are using does not appear to have the required
drivers, you will need to contact the software manufacturer.
Likely this is the case where the camcorder needs to be setup in order to connect to the Firewire port. This is done inside the menus. Windows XP and Windows Vista will detect a camcorder connected to a Firewire port automatically. Make sure your camcorder is powered up and configured before connecting it. Does your PC have a Firewire port? Many do not, PCI cards with firewire ports can be bought online or from local retailers. Some sound cards come equipped with one.
