My PC kept getting this black screen saying

a1240n (desktop) the fans are dead. right? why not start with sounds.? Desktops have 2 or 3 fans 1 in the PSU that must run fast,. does it ,heard and seen? 2: the CPU, has fan for sure, and must spin, blow air across the CPU heat sink not packed full of lint all PC this old ,always have, 3:then the GPU video card may have a fan that again must work. so if all fans are dead, the psU IS BAD, SURE I ASSUMED IT'S PLUGGED IN, AND THE WALL HAS POWER, after all answering for dead PC dead black screens, never any text. no sounds from PC no monitor stated(i'd need that if the PC made sounds)

Set up hp pavilion a1240n. Have high speed

there is no highspeed wifi. but yes 3/4g. dont you mean you have wifi router to connect you MUST match it, not husbands CPU. the router broadcasts a wifi SSID, name you click that and match what the router wants. such is WPA2 and a pass phrase. if you old A1240 is set to wep only or is so old it cant do WPA/2 then it fails. I have no idea what WIFI card is your old PC. and that matters big time. what is best is login to the router and read what it wants them may your pC do that. I warn you the most old wifi cards are useless. buy a WPA2 card (or usb wifi dongle new) NO OS stated by you is this the virus magnet XP? it will not interfere with HUSbands computer. it will move to unused channels, auto, if set that way as it should.

No Sound, Sound device not showing up on HP a1240n motherboard D33005

you might have to clean the dust from your computer dust causes static which causes your computer to overheat and all sorts of problems be sure to wear an anti static earth strap before touching anything inside your computer cleaning your computer of dust using a fine air blower from a compressor making VERY sure that there is no MOISTURE in the air line specifically around the CPU central processing unit and your SOUND CARD you might even remove the sound card to clean the socket dust causes static to build up in a computer causing it to overheat any many other problems hope this helps

I need the software for the CD/DVD. Not the drivers, I can get that from HP. I need the actual program as the hard drive was reformatted and I don't have the software that came with the machine.

umm the utilities and drivers for the hardware are all on www.hp.com under model number support there is no other software specific to the cd other than what comes with it.perhaps you are interested in a restoration disk instructions on that also accessible through that link

Hi. If the green light is on i almost sure its a common case of broken motherboard, you can replace it it easy and cheap.
It can also be caused by a wrongly connected wire. Check them.

Where is the hard drive

Hi,

The hard drive is located underneath the optical drives behind the front panel of the desktop.

Face the computer away from you and then take off the right hand side panel to reveal the motherboard and the other internal components you will see the optical drive(s) on the front right inside the case and the hard drive bay will be under the optical bays.

I had to do a system restore and unfortunately all

The only way to do this is with formal data recovery software, and even then there are no guarantees. I personally use BitMart's Restorer Ultimate Pro, which has been useful. It does require, however, that you remove the hard drive from your machine, place it in another (with the same operating system) that has Restorer installed on it, and then recover the deleted files to a drive on that other machine.

So...yes, even files deleted by a new OS install can usually be recovered, but the overall quality may not be perfect.

Hope that's helpful.

Hi, my HP Pavillion a1240n

There are only certain items that will not power up a machine. 1. The power supply itself could be gone. 2. Check your ram. 3. Your hard drive. In most cases it is the power supply. Take out the power supply from the machine and plug it in to a wall socket. If it starts that it is not the power supply. If it doesn't start replace the power supply.

My computer makes a highish pitched whirring noise

Yes, open the side cover and determine where the noise is coming from - Harddrive, fans, DVD/CD player, etc.. If it's the harddrive, start backing up your important data asap before it goes out completely. If it's a fan, power down the computer and clean the fan. If it's t DVD/CD drive, replace the drive.

No power

Good day.
You may verify if there is no fan activity at the back of your cpu case. If there is none, remove the cpu cover, detached all the power cables to all the devices (board and drives). Remove all the screws that connects the PS case to your CPU case. Go to your nearest tech store and buy new power supply. NOTE: Be sure to buy the same type and power or wattage rating.
Good luck.

My pc gets past the Windows XP black screen and

Hi there,

The first portion of your description of symptoms would usually lead to the conclusion that your hard drive is about shot, but the rows of dots at the Recovery attempt point sqarely to your video card about to fail completely.

It could actually be both problems if your hard drive is 3 or more years old or has been run heavily and continuously for gaming or other intensive apps.

That's about all I think most of us here could tell you from a distance.

Best Regards,

Marcus
