I am amazed though your PC is 3rd level pentium but woirks fine. However today you find something different from your normal use of your PC. Hqave you tried disk clean up or defrag? To do this go to start menu and go to accessories. scroll down to look for defrag to clean up files.
Second, you have perhaps installed files which became very congested to your 40GB HDD and very difficult for a little memory and a processor to move to its normal processing. If you would have an external storage of your files you can do that so that the PC can move fast since during its start up, processor and other hardware can function well.
Last, is to clean up cookies. to do this is to right click internet explorer then choose properties then clean up cookies.

you should be able to create one off another pc. make should not matter but the OS should be the same. Have you tried holding down the F10 key while powering the system on? Sometimes this will put the PC into a reload software mode.
