Dell OptiPlex GX260 PC Desktop - Page 9 Questions & Answers
I want a audio driver for my dell optiplex gx 260
You can download the drivers from Dell WEB site, the support download page. Make sure you select your model desktop or laptop, better still, type in the Service Tag number, it is printed on the label on the bottom of the laptop and on the back or sides of a desktop. (If the Service Tag label is missing then go into the BIOS setting and on one of the BIOS pages, the Service Tag number will be displayed). This will open the page where the specific drivers for your model computer are located. Also make sure you select the Windows XP or Vista version of the drivers for your Windows operating system. You say the power light is orange--I'm assuming that you mean the monitor.
This indicates the monitor is not receiving a signal from the computer.
Assuming that the computer actually powers up (fan runs, you can hear the hard drive being accessed, etc) then your problem lies in the video card.
If, on startup, you do see the BIOS info and maybe even the Windows splash screen before your monitor goes dark, then the problem lies in the video card drivers. In this case, starting in safe mode will work and allow you to download and install new drivers.
I upgraded optiplex GX260 with Windows Vista. I
Vista has a cutoff date on desktop computers for supporting drivers for video.
Your options are to go back to XP, or see if your computer has a spare
PCI slot, if so then buy a PCI VGA board that is Vista supported.
When you open your case and install the board, bootup and Vista
will detect the new VGA board and install the required drivers.
Why is my dell optiplex
Usually the fan regulates its own speed (or rather the BIOS does) in relation to the current heat, you may have heat/environmental issues, or power issues. However I would first check to see that the fan speed isn't statically(permanently) set to a high speed. You can check this in the BIOS, as the machine starts up it will flash a small message ( For Setup or For Setup, something like that), hit the stated button to enter your BIOS, under 'Thermal' or 'Hardware' you should be able to find fan speed.

Do you mean the monitor's power light starts green and then turns orange when you turn it on? Most monitors will go to a power saving mode when they do not get a signal from the computer.
The Dell GX260 has a green power light when on. When the computer is off, the light is off. If it is green and blinking, then the computer is in a power saving mode.
Diagnosis: start with the obvious: is the monitor cable plugged into both the computer and the monitor (if not permanently connected to the monitor)? Are you connected to the active port? (You can add a video graphics card in most desktops. The motherboard video port usually needs to be disabled to use the card ports. If you plug in the monitor cable to the disabled port, it won't work.) Is the monitor set to the correct input? (This applies if the monitor has several ports. In that case, there will be a Source or Input button on the monitor.) Is the computer on? The GX260 has the power button on the front. (Other computers have the power button on the top.) There is also the power supply switch on the back which needs to be on.
Next try a different data cable between the monitor and the computer (if you can). Try a different monitor. If a second monitor works, than the monitor has a damaged main board. If the second monitor doesn't work, then the video graphics adapter has probably failed. Replace the add-on card, if in use, then boot in the safe mode to remove the old graphics driver. Then install the correct driver for the graphics adapter.
Note: the computer and the monitor should both be off when you connect the cables. Then turn on the monitor first and set it to the correct source before turning on the computer.)
I hope this helps.

Optiplex GX260 won't boot
I had the same issue and accidentally discovered a temporary solution. Unplug the power from the back of the machine, open the case and unplug the ATX power connection from the motherboard. With the ATX cable unplugged, plug the power cord back in. When you try to turn the computer back on the power light should turn orange and fans should be spinning, with it powered on plug the ATX connector back in. That should turn the computer off. Turn it back on and it should boot fine. You can even shutdown and restart, but when the power is unplugged you will have to go thru the same process to get it back up. This sounds crazy but it worked on mine. Good Luck!

Hi,
This can be indication that your Harddrive is not being detected by the system. You can try loading the defaults in BIOS or re-detect your harddrive automatically. See if it is listed in the boot devices in BIOS. You can also try to check if power is correctly supplied in the harddrive. Open your CPU box, take out the cables (especially the molex) for the harddrive and put them back in firmly.
You can try to use the 32 bit harddrive diagnostic of dell to check if your harddrive is still working or not. Here's a guide:

Hope this helps.
I uninstalled SoundMax on Add/Remove
you try to change the sound card to another slot that is available then on the computer wait till it detect the audio driver then update it trough the internet
Missing sound device and winminiport
try this first. click on my computer, then go to control panel. you'll come to system; click on it. then click on hardware. you click on device manager. your list of drivers will then appear. anything with a yellow question mark means a missing drive. click on it, and then click re-install/update driver.
it will search the web for the right driver. I believe your model uses a realteck 97; I may be wrong. If the download doesn't work, then go to dell.com, they have drivers listed for all of their older units. hope that helps.
I've changed the CMOS battery
Press f2 to enter the BIOS while you see the Dell start up screen. Once in there you shoudl see an option to load BIOS defaults. Load defaults. This should take care of the issue. Are you sure that you replaced it with an approved CMOS batter, You cannot use a watch battery, even though they are the same size it won't work.
