The circuit board that controls the picture ( under a metal cover) is defective. They aren't expensive and can easily be replaced even by a novice. All you need is a Phillips screw driver to get the back off the TV and to remove the defective board.

If the screen is cracked then it's expensive to replace the screen. You may do better to get a new TV. There are many places on the internet to get replacement screens. If you want to go that route then go to Sharp's website and download the service manual for your model TV. You'll have to disassemble the entire tv to get to the screen.

Problem is in either power supply or the Y-Sustain board.
The Y-Sustain is a relatively large board out of which go connections to the side of the display; it's therefore closer to either the left or the right side of the display, has at least one rather large heat sink on it and fat power cables connecting it to the main power supply.
Often there are fuses on that board - one or more. Check those.
if they are blown you can try to replace them, but expect them to blow again - usually the whole board needs to be replaced. Hoping that this will help to solve the problem....

I do know that on Zenith CRT televisions of the 1990's this will happen and all I did to fix it is to go to the menu and turn the text feature off. This may be true with your Sharp as well.

I do have a work around that I have used on this model for the past3 years. if the sceen goes black. Turn off the tv. Grab the upper left and right hand corners of the tv with your hands. Flex the tv slightly back and forth. then turn it back on. my will usually run for hours after I do this. I do this 4 times a week. I works 100% if the time for me. Sharp lost a customer. good luck.

Some HD screens have processors that handle the top and bottom of the screen independently; in your case I would suggest either of these chipsets could have failed and also the processor board that integrates and displays the top and bottom screen components.
