Try turning off the closed caption and text also check v chip, if you have a channel or channels blocked it could cause a black rectangle to pull up on the screen, if that doesn't work try resetting the unit to factory settings
My Toshiba 50HP66 will not turn on.
Most TVs have a "Protection Mode" that turns the unit off when it detects a failed part inside the tv.
The most likely the tv has a power supply related problem. I can't say it's 100% the problem because I can't actually look at the tv over the internet.
If you have some electronic experience, you can purchase a Service Manual over the internet and diagnose the source of the problem and fix it. The Service Manual will give you circuit diagrams, test points, and part# lists. Usually, cost under $20.
I hope I shed some light on the subject for you.
Toshiba 50HP66 went black after pop/crack sound
most units are made by someone else. your unit probably has LG parts. get the unit looked at by a Toshiba authorized servicer. they may be able to repair it at component level. the $900 you stated sounds at least $200 too high for board level repair.

I think that the pop you heard was an electrolytic capacitor blowing its top on the picture frame board. If you are able to check this for yourself by looking on the board for the one/s with a bulging top or are a brownish/black colour like something has caught fire. And also in this situation smell can be of great help as it will smell burnt out but PLEASE before putting your nose or anything else in the tv take all necessary precautions against electric shock and discharge any electrolytic capacitors in the vicinity. If you are not able to do this yourself find a competant technician. Hope this helps.
No work

TV went black - Please wait message...
I think you both have faults on the line output stage of your tv either the line output transistor has become faulty or the line output transformer itself has become faulty. If you are able to check this for yourself otherwise find a competant technician. Hope this helps.
Problem with tuner
Found the solution somewhere else...
Unplug it while it is powered on. Worked for me.
Toshiba 50HP66 Plasma TV
Found that video 1 and video 2 switching does not work. The switching IC was HOT!. Then found a third video input works but no sound. Hooked -up sound output of DVD player to amplified loudspkr and it works, I hate to throw away a 2 year-old plasma TV when TV and cable still works.
Thanks for the offer anyway.

No power to toshiba plasma tv
This answer is for sjmhan: It sounds like you have a fault on the power supply board of the tv. Please before you open up your tv find out how to take basic precautions against electrical shock and how to discharge capacitors safely. First check if there is a glass fuse inside of the set and if it has blown replace it with one of the same rating. If you replace the fuse and it blows straight away or it still does not come on then it could be quite a few things. Either a faulty resistor or diode or voltage regulator or even the mains transformer itself. One word of warning: NEVER toucch any of the pins of the transformer as this cannot be tested directly without specialist equipment. If you find that it all is too complicated for you then dont feel like you have failed just re-assemble it and find a competant technician. Good luck.
Kimlong: I think you have a faulty component on the power supply board most likely a faulty diode. If you can check this for yourself otherwise find a competant technician. Hope this helps.
My Toshiba 50HP66
It sounds like you have a fault on the picture frame board and for a competant technician this is not much of a problem. Or it could be something as simple as dry solder joints. Either way the tv can be saved and is worth fixing. Hope this helps.
Toshiba 50hp66
We did in fact. We called bak toshiba and explained that it was a few days out of warrenty and that we did some research on the matter and found that the part toshiba used was a LG part, and that LG had issued a extended warrenty on the part of their product. The people at toshiba service asked if we had been told the first time that they were willing to cover some part of the issue due to the short time past the warrenty and acted surprised that we had been given no inclination that they would still cover anything after the warenty period. They eneded up covering the cost of the replacement screen, at a on paper cost of 3k (the tv cost 1600) we had to cover labor at $250. Everything went great and the TV is back on the wall. Hopefully it last untill the OLEDs are 50" and equal in cost.
