Toshiba Notebook PC's in the A105 series, and A135 series, suffered a lot of issues with asking for a HarDDrive password.

When you power on your computer the first chipset to receive power is the BIOS chipset.
BIOS looks to see what devices are installed, does a Ram Memory count, turns the Processor on, and hands the computer over to the Operating System.

WinXP, and Win 7 are two examples of an O/S.
BIOS gave the harddrive in your laptop the moniker of HDD1.
If there was another harddrive installed also, it would be HDD2.
(HDD 1, HDD 2 ]
Reloading the O/S may, or May Not stop the request for the HDD1 password.
Most of the time? No.
Removing the CMOS battery (RTC Battery) will Not fix this issue.

When you go to perform a BIOS update, make SURE the power will not go out.
If the power goes out during upgrading, you will wind up with an expensive doorstop, or an ornament for a table.
A battery backup device of some sort is recommended }
