I have a Gateway MX3702

Microsoft does not support XP systems any longer. its been a couple years at least! When they upgrade their servers, browsers, for the web, they don't consider what will happen to PCs with XP any longer. XP can no longer communicate with the new systems on the web anymore. It may conncet but soon most programs will be too advanced for XP to work with it. It would have to be updated through Windows Update program, but MS know longer updates XP programs. They are outdated. you need a new pc and OS which is now, Windows 10 latest version. You can still get pcs with WIndows 7 or 8 but they will be outdated soon too. Good Luck.

Computer is infected with viruses

Blue screens as a result of infection mean the virus has corrupted the operating system. You can fix it by doing an operating system repair with your recovery or operating system disc. Depending on the virus, this may only be a temporary fix. If this turns out to be a temporary fix, then the sure way to fix it is to completely wipe the hard drive, completely reformat using NTFS, and reload the operating system, which I would recommend. If you have any problems during or after the reload, then the virus damaged the hard drive and it will need to be replaced.

I keep getting dll error messages and cant figure the problem nothing will download and i cant do a system restart

http://support.gateway.com/us/en/product/default.aspx?tab=1&modelId=3155This is your manufacturers website for the drivers for your specific model of laptop. dll is a driver typically.Perhaps you have installed an OS that your hardware cannot support because Gateway isn't supporting that OS. It looks like they are supporting an assortment of windows XP and Windows Vista. So your hardware may not be compatible with another version like windows 7.You can re-install your drivers from that website for a start, is there a device in device manager that has an exclamation or a question mark beside it ?hope that helps,Christopher

Gateway power chager doesn't work. Bought a new one but only works when i hold the charge onto the computer very tightly. can i fix this myself or do I have to send it to a professional?

This is a common problem in many laptops. I do not recommend you try this repair your self unless you have a great deal of experience in circuit board soldering. Most local shops are able to do the repair in a few hours since it usually only requires re-soldering the connection points for the contacts for that plug. When you are pressing in on the plug you are making contact in the bad connections. The issue that may come up however is if the connection that is the problem is between one of the layers of the board and the solder can't reach it.

I am looking for the number lock key on my gateway

The Number Lock function is accessed by pressing and holding the blue "Fn" located at the bottom left of the keyboard and the key with a "padlock graphic" with a number "1" on it. Release both keys and number lock is activated. Press the same key sequence again to shut it off.

The Number Lock function and graphic is shown at the top of page 19 of the "Gateway Hardware Reference Manual" and is presented in the link for easy access.

I hope this helps & good luck! Please rate my reply, thanks.

My lap top does not

If the light has been on for some time, but the battery does not charge, then your battery has most likely reached the end of its usable life.
You will need to buy a replacement battery and recycle the old battery.
I did a quick Google search on this battery, and there seem to be many available.

How to remove and replace the hinges on a Gateway

msgub, the Gateway MX6920 Notebook PC is one of the Gateway MX6900 series of Notebook PC's.

I would like you to download the free Service Manual for the Gateway MX6900 series of Notebook PC's,

http://www.tim.id.au/blog/tims-laptop-service-manuals/#toc-gateway

On this page start at the first line beginning with Gateway 400, then go to the line under it, and across to > MX6900.
Click on MX6900.

This is a PDF file.
After you click on the above file name it may take up to 30 seconds before you see the first page.
The file is downloading in the background.
It may also take additional time for the file to fully download, after the first page comes up.
Suggest you let the file fully download before looking through the file.

(Took 5 seconds for the first page to come up, 30 additional seconds for the file to fully download, just now.
I'm using a medium speed DSL connection)

I don't know if you are familiar with PDF files. If so, please disregard the following;

At the top of the PDF file is the Page Number Box. It's to the Right of the blue Down Arrow.
You can use the blue Down Arrow to get to a particular page, going page by page, or if you know the page number there is a faster method.

Put your mouse cursor in the page number box.
Left-click once
Type the page number
Press the Enter key.

The download you have just completed is just to let you peruse the PDF file. It isn't saved to your computer.
If you close the PDF file, you have to go back to the website, and download it again.

If you wish, you can save the file to your computer.
Using this method you won't have to download it again.
You can also burn a copy off to a CD disk, and have the file anytime you ant.
You can then delete the file from your computer, (After making sure the copy is good, and works), and save Harddrive space.

If you are not aware of how to perform this, please state in a Comment, and I will guide you.

You can easily increase, or decrease the view size of the PDF file. Use the Zoom In, or Zoom Out icon at the top of the PDF file.
The blue circle with the Minus sign in it ( - ) is the Zoom Out icon.
The blue circle with the Plus sign in it ( + ) is the Zoom In icon.

The Bookmarks menu to the left of the PDF file has two different options. I suggest using the option to go to specific points of interest using Bookmark links. This is the icon that resembles a page with a blue Bookmark on it.
Once clicked on, click on the + sign next to Replacing Notebook Components to expand the 'file tree'.

In the PDF file go to Page 38.
Replacing the LCD panel assembly.

In the steps are components listed that have to be removed, before you can remove the Hinges to replace them. These component step removals are listed in Blue.
Click on the blue component step to go directly to the page that outlines how to remove the component.

A) Remove ALL power to the laptop. Remove the AC adapter (Charger), and Battery.

B) Use a multi-compartment container for the various screws you will remove.
Mark each compartment for the area the screws come out of.
Some of the screws look very similar to other screws. They are Not.
Do Not mix them up.

C) You may wish to tape a piece of clear plastic to the LCD screen, to protect it while working with the LCD Display. All it takes is a wrong move with a tool, or fingernail, and damage to the LCD screen can result.
I use blue Painters tape so there is no glue residue left behind.

The LCD Display will have to be removed from the laptop in order to access the Hinges.
There is a Display Cable, (LCD Video Cable), and Antenna Cables going to the LCD Display.
(NOTE* If the laptop has a Wireless Module Card)

These tiny cables should be disconnected in order to prevent possible damage when removing the Hinges.
This is outlined in Replacing the LCD display panel as part of the procedure.

This is what the Hinges look like,

If you need guidance please post in a Comment.

Laptop won't power on with ac adapter or battery

Could be a combination of things.

1) Battery is low. Not enough power to turn the laptop on.
Caused by;

2) AC adapter has a plug on the end of the cable. The plug plugs into a DC Power Jack on the laptop.

The DC Power Jack is bad.

2a) The DC Power Jack has a bad connection to the motherboard, (Cracked solder joints), and/or the jack itself is bad.

2b) Center Pin is loose in the jack's mount.
The back of the Center Pin where it mounts has become loose.

2c) The plastic body of the jack, which composes the jack's case, is cracked. This allows movement of the Center Pin.

2b, and 2c cause a bad connection with the AC adapter plug.

No charge to the Battery, no power to the laptop.

http://www.laptopjacks.com/view_part/For-Gateway-MX6920-DC-Power-Jack-GW51425.html

[ If this is the case the DC Power Jack needs to be resoldered to the motherboard. The cracked solder joints need to be re-melted, (Reflowed)
Entire laptop needs to be disassembled down to the bare motherboard in your hand.
(No Processor, Ram Memory, or any adapter cards mounted to the motherboard. Nada)

OR,
The DC Power jack needs to be replaced.
This entails disassembling the entire laptop, down to just the motherboard in your hand. (Same as above)

The old DC Power Jack is de-soldered, and a new one soldered in place.

Very FEW computer repair shops have the necessary skill level.
They just want to replace the entire motherboard.
IF one is available.
More Ka-Ching for them also. ]

3) The AC adapter is bad.
Not providing power to the laptop, to charge the Battery, nor give power to the laptop without the Battery.

AC adapter cord from adapter to plug, which plugs into the laptop, (DC Power Jack), may have a break in it.

May be an intermittent contact provided by wiggling the cord.
If this is the case the wires have stretched, and broken.
Wiggling causes the wires to briefly touch, and make contact.

Where this cord meets the plug itself. A lot of times there is a break in the wires in this area.

Solution is to replace the AC adapter. There are universal AC adapters you can buy, or perhaps Gateway still has some for sale.
