I am installing this new

you cant see the usb cable? or the usb port? Some printers are still not supplied with a USB cable, silly I know, but for some reason they dont supply. If you were not supplied a USB cable you will need to go to your computer store (or the place you got the printer) and purchse a USB cable

What do u mean by unable to clean 46

Hi there maximum time we found it is a the head problem. The print head is what the cartridges sit in inside of the printer. For resolve the problem please follow these.
Open the printer and wait for the carriage to slide over. Some how if its not come then Unplug the printer & Manually slide the carriage. Now Remove the ink cartridges from the print head & Use wet warm cotton swab or use alcohol to thoroughly clean the print head. Repeat this until there is no ink residue coming off on the cotton swab. After finished it make the head dry then fix it back. Now Try to print something now If that does not work then follow the next step.
Remove the printer data cable & restart the PC & printer. Then fit back the data cable & turn on the printer. Hope that's start working , if no luck then Uninstall the printer driver & restart the PC & Printer both again. Now install the driver of the printer and connect it with PC ,Turn on printer & go for a test print from the printer preference. Thanks & waiting for your reply.

Where is the usb port to plug in the printer

It is located under the scanner cover, under the glass, if you look at the right side of the machine there is a groove to place your figer to completely open the cover, the USB cable would be located on the right side.

My brother mfc 240 c

If there is no direct symptom of paper jam and still you cannot do printing properly, find whether it is because of drum problem. If the paper gets into the end gear of the rotating drum and gets stuck there, you cannot access the printing function. Switch off your printer and check the plastic arms of the printer drum. If there is any paper piece jammed in any of the arms, you can't continue printing. Here also cleaning is the best method to solve the problem. While cleaning, check the arms of the rotating drum. get more information to fix brother mfc printer paper jam problem .

No dial tone when pressing hook fax is returned

The only thing that could stop you from sending a fax or not get a dial tone, would be the connection to the phone line. Make sure the telephone wire is plugged into the line jack (not ext jack) and should go straight to the wall, without splitters or extensions. If you still cannot send a fax, try another wire or jack

What do you do when you have changed your ink

if you are using a refilled cartridge, the printer will not accept them or if you are using a non brother cartridge, you need to install the proper cartridge. and you are using brother cartridge:
  1. Unplug the machine from the AC power outlet, wait approximately 10 seconds and then plug it back in.
if the message 'No cartridge ' still displayed:
  1. remove all the cartridge
  2. install one by one
  3. if there is a defective one you can find it so you need to reinstall a new cartridge

When trying to use your Brother machine you get the message "Unable to _____". The blank may be the word Change, Print, Scan or Clean and these words may vary from model to model.
This message is a general message and will appear for different reasons. It often indicates a paper jam or a mechanical issue. Complete the following to determine the possible issue.

  1. Check for foreign objects, such as a clip or ripped paper, inside the machine.
    Open the top cover and remove any foreign obstacles from inside the fax machine. If you see jammed paper or another item inside this area, gently pull it out and then close the top cover securely.
  1. If the error continues to appear, the machine may have a mechanical problem.
    If the error message continues to appear, the machine will need to be reset. Resetting the machine will erase all faxes in memory and the Fax Journal Report. However, there is a way to transfer faxes in memory and the Fax Journal Report to another fax machine to print them out. Do the following to transfer the data and reset the machine:
Step1: Transfer the Fax Journal Report
  1. Press Menu/Set on the Control Panel of the machine.
  2. Press the up or down navigation key until MISCELLANEOUS appears on the LCD. Then press Menu/Set.
  3. Press the up or down navigation key until DATA TRANSFER appears on the LCD. Then press Menu/Set.
  4. Press the up or down navigation key until REPORT TRANS. appears on the LCD. Then press Menu/Set.
  5. The LCD will prompt you to enter a fax number. Enter the number of the fax that you want to receive and print the report. Press Fax Start.
Step2: Verify and Transfer faxes in memory
  1. Press Menu/Set on the Control Panel of the machine.
  2. Press the up or down navigation key until MISCELLANEOUS appears on the LCD. Then press Menu/Set.
  3. Press the up or down navigation key until DATA TRANSFER appears on the LCD. Then press Menu/Set.
  4. Press the up or down navigation key until FAX TRANSFER appears on the LCD. Then press Menu/Set.
  5. If there are no faxes saved in memory, NO DATA will appear on the LCD. Continue to Step 3.

    If faxes are present, the LCD will prompt you to enter a fax number. Enter the number of the fax that you want to receive and print the faxes. Press Fax Start.
Step3: Reset the machine
After the Fax Journal Report and faxes in memory are transferred to another fax machine, disconnect the Brother machine from the power source for several minutes and then reconnect it.

If the message continues to appear on the LCD, please contact Brother Customer Service.

Did you use genuine Brother ink jet cartridges as recommended by the manufacturer?
Also, did you use compressed air to clean the contacts at the cartridge when removed to make sure the contacts are free of debris or dust?

PRINT UNABLE 46 SEE TROUBLE SHOOTING CHAPTER IN

i posted few days back solution to this particular problem, please follow these steps:

first, try to establish if this really is full absorbent pad, remove power cable from the back, wait 20sec, press menu/set key, insert power mains - in most brother printer/faxes this will display machine error code. if this is code 46, you are on the money, your absorbent pad is full (not necessarily, only counter is showing it as such in most cases).

we will asssume that counter is showing full and therefore reset it again to zero:

1. after machine code is displayed, key in "80",
2. go down with arrow key till you find "purge counter"
3. type "2783" this should set counter to "0"
4. press "stop/exit"
5. press "9" twice
6. remove cartridges from craddle
7. remove power cord
8. insert power cord back
9. switch on printer
10. insert cartridges back

if that do not work, then maybe really you need to replace absorbent sponge... it is done under warranty and if not technician in service centre.

if you want to do it yourself, remove cartridges, remove fron cover and on the right hand you will have "offending" sponge. either clean it (absorbent, lint free tissue is fine to remove excess first, then few drop of water and repeat draining process with tissue several time, at least till "cake" from the top is removed. best of course will be to replace the sponge with new one.

after that you still need to reset counter. in another way - follow steps...

type of paper you are using. (See Printing in the Software User's Guide on the CDROM.Make sure that your ink cartridges are fresh. The following may cause ink to clog The expiration date written on the cartridge package has passed. (Cartridges
stay usable for up to two years if kept in their original packaging.) The ink cartridge was in your machine over six months.The ink cartridge may not have been stored properly before use.
Try using the recommended types of paper.
CLEANING:
Press Ink.
Press a or b to choose Cleaning.
Press OK.
Press a or b to choose Black, Color
or All.
Press OK.
The machine cleans the print head.
When cleaning is finished, the machine
will go back to standby mode
automatically.

Checking the print quality
If faded or streaked colors and text appear on
your output, some of the nozzles may be
clogged. You can check this by printing the
Print Quality Check Sheet and looking at the
nozzle check pattern.
Press Ink.
Press a or b to choose Test Print.
Press OK.
Press a or b to choose
Print Quality.
Press OK.
Press Color Start.
The machine begins printing the Print
Quality Check Sheet.
Check the quality of the four color blocks
on the sheet.
Is Quality OK?
1.Yes 2.No
Do one of the following:
If all lines are clear and visible, press
1 to choose Yes, and go to step j.
If you can see missing short lines as
shown below, press 2 to choose No.
The LCD asks you if the print quality is
OK for black and three colors.
Black OK?
1.Yes 2.No
Press 1 (Yes) or 2 (No).
The LCD asks you if you want to start
cleaning.
Start Cleaning?
1.Yes 2.No
Press 1 (Yes).
The machine starts cleaning the print
head.
After cleaning is finished, press Color
Start.
The machine starts printing the Print
Quality Check Sheet again and then
return to step e.
Press Stop/Exit.
If you repeat this procedure at least five
times and the print quality is still poor,
replace the ink cartridge for the clogged
color.
After replacing the ink cartridge, check
the print quality. If the problem still
exists, repeat the cleaning and test print
procedures at least five times for the
new ink cartridge. If ink is still missing,
call Brother Customer Service

My brother mfc-240c i'm unalbe to trouble shoot I

HOWDY! To be honest, EVERYTHING wants service, but things are not always NEEDING it... A great plot from the manufacturer.... What I do is just unplug it for over 23 minutes, this resets the fuse and memory chip, works everytime... If this does not work out, please let me know, I also know a few tricks that get a little more indepth... Take care.... Guy :)
