How do I format the memory card

There are two ways: 1)Press simultaneously for several seconds the "trashcan" delete button on the back left side and the "metering" button on the top right side of the camera. Both are marked by red "format" indicators. 2) Go to the menu "wrench" icon. The top line will say "format memory card." click on this line then click "yes" and the card will be formatted.

Everything on control panel is flashing. Can't operate camera.

Hi Shirley,It sounds like your camera's CPU is stuck in a loop. First, I'd remove and transfer any pictures on the SD card in a card reader connected to your computer, followed by formatting the card. Leave the SD card out of the D80. Set the power switch on the D80 to "off" and install a freshly charged battery. If it is still flashing, a "Full Reset" may help. Nikon recommends that a full reset be done only under direction of Nikon staff. The procedure is outlined along with graphics on this page under "Full reset". I suggest calling Nikon support to see if they think this procedure (or maybe another that they have) will solve the problem.

My nikon d80 can't change focus areas in

You have locked on to the af-l and it won't default. There are a couple things you can do, where is the book? I can try to explain it, but,,,, In the menu, go to the pencil logo, 03, AF area mode, Dynamic mode, your multi selector button should go round to the 5 points in the view finder. Now the focus lock, when the picture is in focus, it will be in the view finder as a circle with ( ) around it, with the shutter button held down half way, hit the AE-L, AF-L button. it will remain locked, Go back to the menu, pick the pencil again, select the AE, AF lock, and go through the menu there to default your settings, or see if it is locked on, or change the settings, I have mine on auto and hold, the single ones, af ae are off. Now that I am totally confused, you must be too. Hope this works.

In Manual mode only the front dial can be used to set the aperture. That is probably
In Aperture mode you can only choose the the Aperture. Shutter speed is automatically chosen. That is why the shutter speed value will disappear.
In Shutter priority mode Aperture is chosen automatically and hence you can only see the shutter. If this is what you meant by disappearing values then your camera is operating normally. If its something else then let me know.

Please make sure your memory card does not have the "Lock" setting clicked on. It is a small slider at the side of the card. Check this out and try to save again to your card.

Lcd screen: lighter images flash from normal to

You are probably viewing the preview screen in "Highlight" mode. To fix this, use the dial button at the back of the D80 and click up (or down) to see another depiction of the preview screen. It will show you different options until you can see the normal picture without the flashing highlights. Hope this helps.

Dear Camera expert, I bought a

Hi,

I know this is really irritating display and this is a common problem with canon and nikon camera's.Turning off this little annoying feature can be easy or challenging, depending on which camera system you are using.

For Nikon users, it’s a little bit harder to find the setting. First, open the menu and the scroll to the Custom Settings menu (it is the one that has the pencil icon). Then scroll to F menu labeled Controls. Then choose the No memory card? setting. Then select LOCK Release locked and press the OK button. This will keep the camera from firing without a memory card.
I know this sounds like a silly little thing but there is no worse feeling than discovering that you wasted a day of shooting and came home with nothing. Much like my friend that returned from a shoot and asked me how to turn off that stupid function. It seems as though she had spent the day shooting without her card.

Any further help, let me know.

Thanks for using "Fixya".

Do rate the solution as "very Helpful" if 100% satisfied.

Getting an f-- warning and on control panels

Hi there.
The F-- error means the camera cannot detect an electronic contact with the lens; since you are using a "G" lens, it was likely a matter of an improperly mounted lens, or likely dirty electronic contacts on either the camera body or lens.
Give it a clean, remount the lens, clean the electronic contacts and try it manual mode.

Good luck

Buttons do not function on my d80

Some of those buttins work in combination with the two dials (i.e., setting ISO and white balance, etc.). Hold a buttin down and user the knobs simoultaneously.

If this is not the issue, please describe specifically which buttons are not working.
