Installing a ata hard disk.

I dont quite get how you've got them connected so I'll tell you how I'd do it.

First of all, it is kind of standard to put the primary drive at the end of the cable but it doesnt really matter. I go with what ever physically works best.

Connect your 2 IDE devices to the same IDE channel (cable) unless you have 2 IDE channels then put each on their own channel or cable. Make sure you are using 60 conductor cables for each.

If both are on the same cable:
Set the dvd's jumper to slave.
Set the hard drive jumper to master
OR
vice versa.
*Some DVD burners do not like to be slave, or even on the same channel as another device.

The following is the ideal set up
If each is on their own channel (cable):
Set each to master

Be sure bios is set to auto detect for all channels, master & slaves.
** If this doesnt resolve your problem, please post a comment before rating.

Can't open HDD drive

Hi
1. Start > Run > type in cmd then click OK to get a command prompt.
2. Type in chkdsk e: /r (replace e: with the drive letter of your external hard drive).

This won't do any harm, it will fix errors on the disk and try to recover data from bad sectors. It might not solve the problem but it's worth a try. Jyo

Seagate 1TB Hard Drive ST31000333AS The drive spins up, clicks, spins down. not detected by bios.

Right-click on "My Computer" Click "Manage" Double-click "Disk Management" You will probably see Disk 0 and Disk 1 for your primary hard drive. Go to lower right portion of box and scroll down until you see Disk 2. It is probably your USB drive without a letter. It should show the size of the drive. Right-click in the left portion of that drive box (Disk 2) Click "Initialize" and "OK" in the next dialog box. This takes just a few seconds and it should now say "Online" in the "Disk 2" box. Right-click in the box to the right side of the "Disk 2" box (where it shows your disk drive size and says "Unallocated". Click "New Partition" and a "New Partition Wizard" will open up. Click "Next", then select "Primary Partition" and click "Next". Verify partition size (use entire disk size available unless you are creating multiple drives) and Click "Next". Assign drive letter ("F" is typical if CD-Rom is E) and click "Next". Format this partition with "NTFS", "Default", "New Volume" and click "Next". Then click "Finish" to exit the wizard and start formatting. Be patient... this can take awhile (it took just over an hour for a 320GB drive). When done, you should see an icon for your drive in Windows Explorer! hope this helps

My external hard drive cannot read by my PC at all

Assuming that your PC is running Windows XP then this does not support GPT drives which are created when the drives are used in a Mac computer - you would either need to upgrade to using Windows Vista or 7 which do support GPT or else do a low-level format of the drive to completely remove the GPT formatting data by writing zero's into the first 100 sectors of the drive - this will destroy all data on the drive! GPT = GUID Partition Table which allows for up to 128 partitions on a single drive....See http://support.microsoft.com/kb/302873 for detailed information on GPT

Hello,

Have you tried putting it into an external enclosure and seeing if it can be identified?
Does it spin up?
Do you hear and sounds coming from the drive? (clicking is bad)

I have a seagate barracuda 7200.12, 500 GB, HDD,

If you have another computer, you could try to plug it in there as a slave/secondary drive so that you can try to see if My Computer would still recognize it. If it works, then great, you can still do backups. If not, and you really need that data, you might want to get the services of a data recovery company.

That black thingy is the power connector , it cannot be repaired or replaced since it's part of the board of the disk.
If you cannot make it work long enough to recover your files then the only thing you can do is to find out another exact same model of disk and swap its board.
