External HD is not detected by laptop Windows XP

A common issue...I'm sure your hard drive is working fine, Windows is just not giving it an unused drive letter.

1. Insert the device (camera or usb drive)
2. Right-click "My Computer" and select "Manage".
3. Click on "Disk Management"
4. Right-click the item in the list that looks like your camera or usb drive, and then click "Change Drive Letter and Paths."
5. Click "Change".
6. Give it a drive letter that is not being used.
7. Click OK.

The device should work instantly after that.

Fogit it - you are fcked. Only alternative you have at this juncture is to avail yourself of a data recovery service at great expense. Sometimes a repair operation or diagnostic test on a finicky drive could permanently trash the unit or make it worse. That is apparently what happened to your drive. In the future this incident should impress on you the fact that a hard drive backup of important data is always a must. All hard drives from the moment of manufacture start to die - we just do not know when!

I have a WD1600BEVS - 60RSTO 2.5 inch HDD that

Hi.

If the hard disk been opened unfortunately you lost your data. You can try to send it to a data recovery company but it will cost few thousand bucks to get your data out of the disk plates.

Opening a hard drive to check it out is 99.99% chances of fail because of dust. If you can fix what was wrong and put everything back together and plug it the head will hit the dust at 7200 RPM and it's like a plane crashing on a mountain.

Good luck anyways.

Western digital lap top drive does not seem to spin at start up 160 gb

Test all leads that attach to your hard drive including electrical extensions,IDE,SATA

the leads from your MOTHERBOARD TO YOUR HARD DRIVE make sure they have a secure connection and are not faulty or just replace them they could be faulty make sure all leads that are attached to your drives dvd\cd 3 1/2 inch floppy have secure connections and are not faulty even the electrical extensions or just replace them they could be faulty a computer needs its connections to continue its cycle and have an end so any faulty leads will end up with a computer error even something as small as a faulty electrical extension or fan lead can cause you problems

computers need all of the data and electrical current to travel through every working device and to have an end to be able work properly

motherboard and a hard drive any leads between them will fail before your motherboard or your hard drive if its a flat ribbon 40 pin type IDE replace it this will be the first to fail

check all electrical power input and extensions make sure they are securely seated even the cd/dvd floppy drives need to have current go through make sure these drives are working

also check the Cmos battery and computer RAM modules make sure they are securely seated with no dust built up or in the sockets on some motherboards cmos batteries are soldered in

hope this helps you

Hi, I've just installed a

Nigel, Older versions of Windows did not have the ability to see the larger drivers. You have two answers here. First if you want to load Windows with the larger drive than you can not use the restore. You will have to load XP manually hopefully with the lastest SP (3) and have the lastest hard driver controller driver to recognize the larger size drive. The best answer is to do the recovery as planned leave the drive at 54GB for now. Once done do all your updates. I mean all. These updates are key to preventing malware and spyware. Once done you can look at Cnet.com and look for a free partition management software. If you do this abit then read the reveiws and buy one. You'll be impressed with the little tools it comes with. It will allow you to see and expand your drive to it full size. It's your best and easiest answer. Good Luck.

Not able to access my

Make sure your have it connected properly, if there is instructions reference them. If that doesn't take care of the problem make sure you have a driver installed for it.
What operating system are you running? Considering about 90% of PCs run Windows I'm going to assume that. To get to the Device Manager where you can check the drivers follow these steps:

To open Device Manager, click Start, and then click Control Panel. Click Performance and Maintenance, and then click System. On the Hardware tab, click Device Manager.

For information about using Device Manager, on the Action menu in Device Manager, click Help.

Please let me know if that does not solve your issue.
