Acomdata external HD not read. Clicking sound.

Try taking it out of the casing and putting it into another external hard drive case. That is if you can, if its making a clicking noise it probably means your hard drive went bad or it means its not getting enough power to run make sure all the cords are hooked up tight. I had that problem once the hard drive wasn't getting enough power and i had to mess with it on the inside to make it have enough power. I'm not saying take the hard drive apart im saying take the casing off it and check the inside cords to see if they are tight enough. If that doesn't work leave a message and ill try to help again.

When I turn the drive "on" nothing happens - no sounds or lights - just like nothing is there

if its an external usb drive

click start control panel administration tools computer management device manager look through all of your devices if you see a yellow question mark?or exclamation mark ! or red xright click to reinstall drivers or

if you can see your usb but its not workingports(com&lpt)right click update driver

sometimes the wires inside the cable will be damaged due to bending or stretching or placing heavy equipment upon the cable

just replace the cable of the hard disk, when you plugged the external disk drive you got that windows could recognize the USB device change the cable everything should work fine again,

check the USB leads that attach to the motherboard usually red-white-green-black make sure they are securely seated and have no dust build up on them dust will cause static and a lot of unforeseen problems

if this fails to fix the problem

type in run "regedit" then press ok then you can see registry editor then locate below key. HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\Class\{4D36E965-E325-11 CE-BFC1-08002BE10318} And remove upper filter and lower filter.

Then restart computer then check.

Also locate the below key and make sure it's value is 3 not 4. HKLM\system\currentcontrolset\services\usbstor make sure start value is 3 not 4

if still no luckyou might have to install a usb 2 or 3 card they are cheap and easy to install you can buy these on Ebay very cheap hope this helps

When I turn on the drive, the front pushbutton

Its sounds to me like the external unit has died. This seems to be a common problem with this manufacturer after about a year of use. In most cases the actual hard drive will be fine but it will have to be removed from the case in order for the data to be accessed.

My external acomdata hard drive is flashing from

Hello

Okay , so there are some steps to figure out what is wrong with your external.

Firstly , if your computer makes a sound when you plug in your external , go to Start-Control Panel-Administrative Tools-Computer Management-Disk Management , and see if your external drive is listed here with your local drives. If it is listed , right click on the drive and change the drive letter to make it appear in "my computer".

If your drive does not make a connection sound when connecting to your computer and also does not show up , please follow the next step.

Remove the hard drive from the casing if possible and install it in your computer case or another external case.If the drive works , the problem is with the casing and you can ignore the drive.

Now , if the problem is with the casing , there are still 3 possibilities.

  1. The USB cable between the drive and the computer may be damaged.
  2. The circuit board which connects your drive to the interface of the external may be blown.
  3. The power supply (if applicable) may have a blown transformer.
The latter is the easiest to diagnose , does your external light up at all when you plug in the power? If not , then this is probably your problem. On the bottom of the adapter is a label which you will be able to use to have a new adapter made at your local electronics shop and this will cost about $30 max. They will also be able to test the adapter with a clamp meter to see if this is really the problem and this should be free.

The second component you want to test is the USB cable. If you have a printer , swop out the cables and see if your printer functions normally. Most externals use the same connector so you should be able to test it in this manner. If the cable works go on to the last step. If the cable is defective , replace it with a new one which you can find for about $10 at most electronics and chain stores.

The last component to test is the circuit board. This is a bit of a grey zone as you probably won't be able to spot the blown component unless it failed really badly. With the casing already opened , locate the external's circuit board and check to see if you have any blackened components or fluids leaking from some components. If all the other components of the external worked perfectly , then this is the faulty part. It is not really economical to replace the circuit as most of the time it is out of production by the time you need to replace it and it still costs a lot even if it is available so if your drive is working perfectly when connected via sata or IDE on your computer , the best is to buy a new casing and place your old drive in the new casing.

A casing costs about $50 and you could get it at most tech shops and big chain stores like Best Buy.

I hope this solves your problem and please reply if you need more help.

Kind Regards
Andrea

My drive is plugged into

Hi,

The problem here could be the USB lead itself. I suggest that you try another USB lead with the storage device.

Also has the drive been moved recently or accidently knocked? If so remove the USB lead and the power jack for about an hour. This is to let the drive settle. After that plug in the power jack and turn the device on, then connect the USB lead.

Hopefully this will resolve the problem. If it doesn't and you have tried another USB lead then please let me know.

Good luck.

Power light comes on but all I can here is

Im sorry to tell you this but when u hear that ticking noise the controler board has failed the only thing you can do is......
spend some $ to get a new controler installed (if the information is that that important)
Buy another drive and if you know what you are doing when it comes to replacing the controler board from another drive go to ebay and buy another drive
Or last thing send it out and have the drives information recovered which will cost around 700-2400.00 dollars

My acomdata 500gb harddrive will not connect to

Power supply failure. Check the voltage on the 12V and 5V rails of the power supply (a DM-5127?) Make sure that the AC voltage is ZERO. If there is AC ripple current, the enclosure will seem like it should work, but will fail. Best to transfer the drive to a new enclosure if the unit is still under warranty.

Looking for new driver

Probably not a driver issue - likely the DM 5127 power supply has failed. They fail in a way that lights the lights and may or may not spin the drive. If you have a voltmeter, see if there is any AC voltage on the 12V and 5V rails. If the AC voltage is not zero, the power supply is failed. Fastest fix is to move drive into a new PATA/IDE enclosure.

The device doesn't mount on the desktop

Is the front light flashing off and on? The LM5127 power supplies on these units tend to fail in a way that puts the lights on, but won't spin up the drive (high AC ripple current).

My new 500 G external hard drive seems to limit

A disk may be formatted using different file systems. The ones used by Windows PCs are FAT32 (an extension of the old MS-DOS FAT) and the newer NTFS.

If the drive is formatted as FAT32, the maximum file size is 4.294 million bytes (some systems report this as 4.294 GB; it is actually 4 GB minus one byte).

If this is the case (Start -> Run Command -> DISKMGMT.MSC and look for your external drive, it will say something like 489 GB NTFS or 489 GB FAT32), my suggestion is to back it up somewhere else and reformat it as NTFS. There also are utilities to convert FAT32 into NTFS, but if anything goes wrong during the conversion, you can say goodbye to all your data.

Note that you won't be able to access a NTFS formatted external drive except from Windows PCs (and most Linux, usually read only), while FAT32 disks are readable from Mac OS X too.
