Have combination CO/Gas detector. Was
Lead-acid batteries under charge normally generate gas, hydrogen I believe. This is why all chargers designed for these type batteries (should) carry warning labels to not use them in confined areas. This likely set off the detector, providing a "real world" test of the unit.

How do you get the battery out of the unit
On the back there are two "pads" with angled ridges. Push these with your thumbs in the direction of the "arrows" the ridges form, generally toward the center of the unit. If you still have problems opening the compartment, it's possible (but unlikely) that the present battery has "leaked" inside the unit, "cementing" the battery cover in place. If this has happened, discard the unit as it is unrepairable. More technical help is available at Kidde's "Hotline" at 1-800-880-6788.
