may not be a solution, just an idea
but the switch shits actual gears, the splines may not be aligned enough to allow the transfer.
put it back in low, run the motor a few revolutions to change the alignment of the gears, then try the shift again, like a crash box on a model T

Get a torx bit, either 10 0r 15 & slowly undo screws about one third. There should be 4 of them. When screws are loose they will take pressure off selector & you should be able to free it up.

The problem could be the brushes and if so it is be quit easy to replace them by pulling the drill apart and slipping the old ones out of there sleeves on the armature and slipping the new ones back in there place . you can buy these brushes at any good tool shop . all you will need is the model number of the drill which you can locate on the side case of your drill . hope this helps.

1. Turn the screw clockwise to take it out.
2. Then you needs 3/8 allen key & insert the short side of the allen key & tighten the chuck.
3. hold the drill at the edge of the table & wack the allen key
counter clockwise & do it again as needed.
4. dewalt keyless chuck will fit but you might add a washer to insure the chuck is not rubbing the clutch collar.
5. putting it back together the other way.

How old is the battery? They do die if old and well used! You can try checking the fuse inside the charging unit . If this does not work or fuse is OK you can get the battery revived (there are places that do this) if it is not completely stuffed or just get a new battery which are quite cheep on ebay

You'll need to do it yourself-dis-assemble the battery and check each cell individually to determine the bad ones. You can purchase replacement cells very inexpensive.
