Wire repair
It's not easy to repair since the wires are finer than hair and one has an insulator and one doesn't. Even if you are good at soldering and are very mechanical it may not be a very good repair. That's why they sell replacements

As long as these headphones are not the wireless type. Then your problem sounds like the earth connection has become detached. Perhaps at the plug/jack end. If you can't solve it cut the ******** and fit a new one.

The cotton is a type of insulation remove as much as you need to. You also have to carefully scrape the color off each wire to expose bare wire to get a good solder joint. Remember to match the colors when resoldering.

Carefully strip out the cotton strings I think this is causing bad connections with your joints and join the bare wires red to red green to green and the copper which is the earth to copper and this should work
