I have a samsung DVD player that is not working
This fault sometimes due to a weak optical lens. Try to clean the optical lens by using a cd cleaner or use a cotton buds to wipe the lens but very gently. You should remove the cover of your unit but if your unit is under warranty try to bring it back to your service center for the warranty, but if the warranty is already lapse try to do it your self. If you remove the cover you will see the dvd rock and there is top plastic that supports the cd when inserted try to remove the screw and you can see the optical lens try to wipe it gently. then try a dvd, if still not working trimmer bellow the optical lens should be adjusted and it must be done by a technician because if wrong adjustment is apply the lens might be damage. good day and best regards.

I need to change region
In that case you must obtain a remote that has numbers. Ideally it should be an original one, but a correctly programmed universal one will do just fine.

Need setting to change regional code on samsung DVD P172
This works to change region code 5.
This is how it works.
1)Power on player.
2)Ensure that there is no DVD inside the player.
3)The tray should be closed.
4)Press "Subtitle" on the remote control.
5)Press 53814 for region 5 (For other regions see any of the other cracks)
6)The region code 5 will be displayed on the left top corner of your screen.
7)Now press 9. A 9 will be displayed on the top left corner of the screen.
8)Press Subtitle on the remote again
9)Power off the player.
10)Power it on again and you are region independent!!
Worked for me.

DivX subtitles
This is one of the better sites around for this type of information.
http://www.dvdhelp.com/
You can also do a web search with the model number asking about language support, and subtitle support.

Samsung region dvd problem
What I am saying is very generic, and does not apply to any one type of DVD player.
Apparently, for many models the region codes can only be changed a number of times, and then the unit locks. This is how most of these units are designed. It is probably locked to the last code used. The user instructions will normaly give an indication to the number of changes allowed.
When the unit is locked, it cannot be changed. The locked code is burned in to the EPROM of the DVD player.
You need a true multi region DVD machine. This would be a player that will not ever lock. There are some on the market. Carefully research this spec before making your purchase.
There are some models that will lock, but it is possible to patch them to not lock. The patching has to be done before the unit does get locked. You would have to explore the net to find this information.
