Canon PowerShot S5 IS Digital Camera - Answered Questions & Fixed issues
Hy guys. I am having a problem with my Canon S5
This is a very odd problem. I wonder if you've got the depth of field preview button activated. As you look at the camera from the front there is a button on the left below where the lens meets the body roughly at 7 'o'clock That is usually the the DOF preview button. Try a little fiddle with that.

U have a sick puppy on your hands. Hopefully, the camera is still under warranty. If not, it may not be cost effective to repair and replacement might be in order.
IS THERE A ELECTRIC PLUG FOR THIS CAMERA
Yes, Ebay sells one for about 10 to 12 dollars, it's called a AC to DC power adapter/charger. Enter your cameras model number in Ebay and scroll down until you see the adapter as they are a few sellers selling them.
Canon Powershot S5IS Aperture
Hey Kate
I have owned a Canon Powershot S5 since launch last year and I take a lot of photos with blurred background. I select AV on the dial (Aperture priority) and set aperture to between 2.7 and about 4.0 max, depending on how much depth of field I want and what my subject is.
This setting blurs the background beautifully.. Just remember that an aperture of 2.7 will give you a very shallow depth-of-field, so if focus on face is important, make sure you have face recognition set to ON.
I hope this helps
Canon powershot s5is isn't connecting to computer
Try NOT connecting your camera to your computer. The best way to download pictures from your camera to your computer involves removing the memory card from the camera and plugging it into a card reader (either built-in to the computer or connected via USB or FireWire). This is likely to be faster than connecting the camera to the computer, and won't run down your camera's batteries.Once the card is plugged in, it will appear to your computer as a removable drive. You can use the operating system's drag&drop facility to copy pictures from the card to the computer's hard drive, the same way you copy any other files. Or you can use any photo cataloging program such as
Picasa.

The LCD screen is wired to the camera though a bundle of wires that runs through the hinge and after a while the wires inside start breaking from all the movement, because they are not superfine wires, or designed to last a long time.
Eventually it will stop working in any position, and the bad news is that there is nothing you can do about it unless you have what it takes to remanufacture the harness, because Canon refuses to make or sell that part anymore. It will have no effect on the rest of the camera's operation, including the viewfinder in the eyepiece.
Its called planned obsolescence and Canon has no sympathy for you because they want your camera to die so you'll buy another camera, not a cheap cable and replace it yourself, like many people would like to do.
It's a little like making a bicycle with a priority seat that breaks, and refusing to sell the replacement.
If you contact Canon they will offer to sell you a new camera at a "substantial discount", but it you scout the internet, their super deals really aren't super deals, they're just discounts off the full retail price.
It was a great camera with lots of features that were ahead of it's time, but I'm sad to say it might have been too well featured, and they no longer offer small cameras like that with comparable features. You can get a better zoom with no hot shoe, or ones that require expensive pripority lithium batteries and chargers, but not any like the one you have now.
Powershot not keeping date
Make sure the CR1220 battery is installed and seated correctly (try turning it over.) Make sure it is making good contact. Another possibly, the new battery is bad, test it with a meter if you have one.
How do i get my camera to start up help?
First, do you know for sure it was working when you bought it?
Second, are your batteries all good?
Third, make sure you have all the batteries installed the right direction.
Finally, make sure the compartment door is properly shut.
I really don't know much about cameras, just advising of some of the basic things I would double and triple check first.
Where is serial number
I have an old vintage clarinet made by Parisian Ambassador F.E. Olds & Sons and i cant seem to find the serial number on it. Where would it be????

Canon S5IS picture darkens
I can't think of anything that is wrong in your camera. Must be a connection point in a switch that has a too high resistance. And even when you manage to find what switch, you could not replace it.
In the 7 years that your camera exists, camera's have become more sophisticated, and picture quality has increased even in the cheaper models, so perhaps it is worth thinking of a new camera? Perhaps you now even can buy a beginner DSLR, or a system camera, cheaper then your S5IS was 7 years ago.

Canon S5 IS -LCD screen turns off just before clicking into place
That is typical and expected when the wires inside cable inside the hinge start to wear out. It's called planned obsolescence.
Unfortunately even though it's a very common failure, very repairable, and the rest of the camera is probably going to work for another 20 years, Canon will not sell you that part or install a new one. It has very fine wires inside it, and two proprietary connectors on each end.
They will offer to take your old camera in trade for a discount that is close to worthless, because the prices they quite on replacement cameras is about what you can buy them for new on the internet.
The good news is that you can still do everything though the eyepiece, except use the articulating screen.
