Check that the speakers are the same impedance as the amplifier is rated for and that the speaker wires or connections are not shorted. It sounds like you are trying to drive 4 ohm speakers with an amp that is rated for 8 ohms - it will work at low volumes, but will overheat and shut off if you try to drive it too hard (higher volumes)
