ok i have taken these remotes apart and cleaned them , also made sure that the rubber buttons line up and properly touch the board inside . and sometimes it will fix the problem you have . but if they have been drop to many times the damage may not be fixed . note -> if you have $5.99 a month protection plan you can get a free replacement remote .

When your all other buttons work only the mute button doesnt work.The problem lies with the mute button only.Not with programming.

According to Direct TV tech I just got this response "There are no working codes for the current rca models, reason rca folled around with codeset so all previuos rca codes in all remote are useless. Get an aftermarket learning remote."

Direct Code Entry:

Find the code your device.

1. Press and hold "CODE SEARCH".

2. Press and release the TV, VCR or Cable button. If programming an AUX position, press and release AUX first and then press the device type to be programmed.

3. Enter the 3-digit code number.

4. Release "CODE SEARCH".

5. With the device on, press another button to test (volume control/power button).If it does not work, repeat steps 1 to 5 with other codes which you have.

follow the below steps to set remote without codes

Code Search:

1. Turn on the device you wish to control.

2. Press and hold "CODE SEARCH".

3. Press and release the TV, VCR or Cable button. If programming an AUX position, press and release AUX first and then press the device type to be programmed.

4. Release "CODE SEARCH".

5. Press ON/OFF repeatedly until the device turns off.

6. When the device shuts off press and release ENTER.

7. Try using the remote. If it does not function repeat steps 1 through 6

Some times, the T.V tuner may not support the remote which you are having. Please cross check if it is so. In that case, you should replace your T.V tuner.

switch the toggle to tv, press mute and select at the same time until the light over tv blinks. then press 991 lights will blink again, then press 1. now press the power button and point at the tv and press the channel up arrow. you are now doing a code search and as soon as the remote finds the right code, your tv will turn off. once tv turns off, press select. if tv powers back on by pressing the power buttin, then you have found the code.
