MODEL AFG 5496-C FREEZER WHICH BUTTON SHOULD BE LIT WHEN SWITCHED ON TO FREEZE

Green light means that freezer is connected to the mains/electric Red means that your freezer has not reached minimum working freezing temperature, this is not good news, something may be wrong with your freezer, get it checked by a competent person. yellow light means that you have switched the fast freeze button on. This yellow switch allows the freezer to run continuously so that the frozen food you brought home from shopping can freeze up quicker. You must not leave this light on for more than 3 hours. It will cause you to waste a lot of electric and will place a lot of stress on the working component in the fridge.

I have whirpool chest freezer defrosted and off for 4 months then turned on 2 red lights going motor is running but not freezing turned up temp to coldest tempurature with amber light on stil the moto

Since the motor is running, the compressor it is connected to must also be running. The compressor is the thing that provides the cooling under normal circumstances. The only thing I can think of as to why you are not getting cooling is that the refrigerant charge has leaked out of the system. I don't know anything about the red lights you mention.

How can the gas be refilled in the freezer unit

I can explain how to do it but you will need a F-Gas certified professional refrigeration technician to do this job. If you unscrew the 4 screws to the compressor closet, you will see a copper stump on the side of the compressor, that stump used to have an access valve that allows refrigerant to be measured into the refrigeration system. For gas to be reapplied a technician will have to re-braze a valve onto that stump in order to recharge refrigerant into the system.

The standby light is still on

Are you sure it is a standby light? Usually the orange light is showing you it is in fast freeze. Try switching the orange button off and monitor the temperature. The freezer should cycle on and off, not run continuously.

The red light is on

This means the sensor has determined that the temperature is rising. This can happen if the door was left open (which doesn't appear to be the case with your green light) or an unusual amount of warm food was put into it. If this is not the case you may have a cooling problem. If you can put a thermometer in there and check the temperature, working properly the freezer should be around 0 F. If you have trouble please send the model number from the tag on the freezer. That will help with trouble shooting.

My whirlpool freezer sat for a year and now I

it is either your thermostat or the overload relay. if it make a loud clicking noise every few minutes than that means it is your overload relay with is on your compressor but if not the it will be your thermostat. try tapping on it.but most likely it will need to be replaced

Chest Freezer not cooling

Please don't rate this solution, as anything but FixYa brings my rating down, but here's what you've got:
You have a refrigerant leak (commonly referred to a Freon, but these days usually R134A refrigerant). Some refrigerant has leaked, so you are still getting some cooling, but there is not enough refrigerant left to cool throughout the entire evaporator coils. This is NOT a repairable condition, as the coils are foamed in place and not accessable for leak repair. If this unit is under 5 years old (typical sealed system warranty) the manufacturer will most likely replace your freezer with a new one. If over 5 years, you are out of luck. Buy a replacement freezer.
