make sure that the Ubuntu is seeing an X386 and not a X686 emulated processor. Ubuntu stopped support on 686 procs for the 64bit family awhile back. you can choose this under the items.

As soon as the server turns on and you see a BIOS screen press the F8 key constantly. This should be you to the safe mode screen. If not then try another keyboard, or another USB slot.

Check your firmware levels and make sure they are current. When you download the latest firmware from itrc.hp.com, take a look at the history/change log in between your version and the current version and see what was fixed. It may shed some light on this problem.
