I have a Nikon N8008.
I have 3 N8008s bodies and one of them started hanging up in the manner you describe, but only at 1/8000th sec. The reason you can't see through the viewfinder is because the mirror is up. One mine, pressing the shutter release button again brings it down. Some other solutions online suggest weak batteries, but I've ruled that out. It also seems that this is just something that can eventually happen with the N8008/N8008s. It bugs me that this started happening, but I only paid $16 for the camera and I've never, ever taken a photo at 1/8000th.
What does the shutter speed set on?
To set the shutter speed, press and hold the mode button and then turn the thumb wheel on the right until M (for fully manual control) or S (for shutter priority auto exposure) appears in the display. Remove your finger from the mode button and the thumb wheel will now adjust just the shutter speed. If you're in manual mode the aperture setting will need a separate adjustment for correct exposure, if you're in shutter priority mode the camera will select the aperture suited to your shutter speed for each exposure.

Yes the cover must be on for the battery to make contact to complete the circuit. You can try getting a cover from PhotoTech Repair Service. They are Nikon Authorized repair facility and should have the part.

What type of lens works with this Nikon N8008s
Any of the Nikon Auto Focus(AF) lenses should work fine with it. There are also a number of fine aftermarket lenses made for your 8008, by Sigma, Tamron, Tokina, Quantaray and others. Be sure you get the Nikon AF lenses, as they make the same lenses for Sony and Canon. You cannot use the Lenses made for another brand, as they will not fit, work right, and can damage your Nikon.

it seems to think you reached the end of the film. Try rewinding. Once in a great while film does not want to exit the canister for whatever reason. It stops. that creates tension, film advance motor stresses out and signals the computer program which tells you that it thinks you're outa film. REWIND!!!
I doubt you did anything wrong. Try rewinding the film. Another possible fix if its electronic issues is to remove power(battery) and reinstall battery.
