The self-cleaning shavers are all much more expensive to maintain than traditional non-self-cleaning shavers. Your model 8985 is not inherantly more expensive to maintain than any other self cleaning model by Braun or other brand. The cleaning solution is expensive, the cleaning machines break because of exposure to liquid, and the heads often wear out faster as well.
Because of this, I strongly suggest you buy a shaver without a self cleaning machine. Most models that do not include self cleaning machines are very easy to clean with an old toothbruh dipped in rubbing alcohol. If you liked the way the Braun shaved when it was in good condition, I would suggest the following models linked below as possibilities

To replace, you will need to open the shaver body. You will first need to gently pry off the 'cap' on the bottom that surrounds the hole where the cord plugs in. Once removed the side grips will pull off revealing 4 screws. Remove screws to take off back cover and access insides. Inner parts simply lift out

the 110 plugin goes into a circuit which changes AC to DC for charging the internal NiCad batteries. If there is NO charge whatsoever in the batteries, the shaver will not work. If you have any electronics background a simple test with a VOM will determine if the bridge rectifier is putting out any DC.[you must disassemble the shaver] If you have no experience on circuits take it to a repair location.

I have the same problem, but never drop it. The way mine died, as if it was running out of battery even tho its was fully charged 2days ago.

You can reset it very easily..here is the method...
There is a small button under LCD screen..If you push that button 3 times a message comes as "foil +cutter" push 4.th times than you will have a message"reset foil" and push again and keep pushing until flashing stops it gives "Reset OK" message..it is done..

The cleaning base is the problem. It probably got wet inside and the circuitry is damaged. This is almost always why these go bad. You dont have to replace it to use your shaver as you now know that you can charge the shaver directly from the cord.

Most Braun shavers are warranted for 2 years. The warranty covers the entire shaver except for the foils and cutters. No manufacturer covers the foils and cutters.
If you believe that your problem is covered by the warranty, call Braun at 1-800-272-8611 for assistance.

are you talking about springs under the center cutter bar between the foils? If so, you will need a new foil and cutter set. It is available at shaveroutlet.com with link below

Just make sure that the blades in the shaver are in good condition, if not you may need to replace the blades. it also doesn't hurt to lightly dampen your face. Also lightly run it across your face. don't push down let it slide across not grind. if you have really long hair on your face, don't try to cut it all at once. you may have to lightly go over it, to shorten it, then go back over it again.

Hello. Get a can of WD-40 at any hardware store or auto parts store. This is a penetrating lubricant. It has a tiny tube which you can squirt the lubricant through directly to the frozen trimmer. Spray the trimmer, let it sit for a couple of hours and try it. If it is still frozen, repeat the spray and wait a couple more hours. WD-40 will work, I assure you. Regards, Joe
