Sony BDP-S300 Blu-Ray Disc Player - Answered Questions & Fixed issues
Player can not play disk
There are firmware upgrades at the Sony site, I just upgraded to v5.20. You download an .exe file, run it under Windows, burn the resulting .iso file to a CD, insert the CD into the BDP-S300 and wait about 20 minutes. More detailed directions on the site, too.

Blu-ray disc
Hey jude06,
In order to play Blu-Ray discs, you must unfortunately own a Blu-Ray player. Neither HD-DVD players nor Progressive Scan/Upconvert DVD players are capable of playing the discs, and standard DVD players are not able to recognize information on the discs due to how they are constructed.
Please keep in mind that there are always a number of options available to you, should you consider purchasing a Blu-Ray player. While the average asking price with many retailers for stand-alone Blu-Ray players is between $300.00 and $500.00, you can typically obtain an internal Blu-Ray drive for your computer for considerably less. Additionally, the Playstation 3 may also be a viable alternative - the current 40GB model not only plays Blu-Ray discs, but also has the added perk of being a video game console for around the same price as the average stand-alone Blu-Ray player.
Hope this helps you out.
Sincerely,
Aaron

Sony BDP-S300.
I had the same problem and sent an email to Sony. Here's the answer (it worked) :
Go to page 53 of Operating Instructions Manual and reset the player as indicated.
If you do not have the manual, here's what to do : Press Power On button. Power On light will come up. Now, Looking at front panel you have (at right side) 5 switches : Play, Pause, Stop, Rewind, and Fast Forward. Stop is the center switch.
Now, with Power On light on (it lasts only about 30 seconds), HOLD DOWN the STOP button and PRESS POWER ON button (the power on light has to be ON). This will reset the player. It worked with mine one.
