You can remove the two screws in the top cover above the roller. Then lift off the top cover exposing the roller. You can then pull the roller out, and clean out the cradles that hold the end caps. The square end caps can also be pulled off the bearings at the ends of the rollers. I had a lot of stuff wrapped around mine creating a lot of drag, but the bearings were just fine once everything got cleaned out. Just remember which end cap is which, cause they're different for each end.
You don't actually have to turn the vacuum over for this. The two screws you need are on top, above the brush roller. It is the top cover that comes off instead of the bottom on this vac. You'll see everything once you lift it off.
Sounds like the beater brush is frozen and the drive belt is burning up.
Check your directions on changing the drive belt for the beater brush.
When you remove the beater brush, clean as best you can. At each end of the beater brush you will find a plastic clip. These clips hold the beater brush in the vacuum.
Add some WD40 between the brush and the clips. Turn the clips by hand and be sure they turn freely.
Reassemble and at the same time, put on a new drive belt.

It sounds like you burned the belt. Turn the unit over, remove the cover plate where you see the brushes. On the side of the brush roller is where the belt is located. The belt should be very tight on the roller. Also, you may see little black rubber pieces stuck to the area where the end of the roller is or in the part where the belt runs. Get your owners manual out and read how to change the belt. I'll bet when you ran over the carpet it hung on some of the nap and hung the brush roller up for a second or so. That's all it takes sometimes to fry the belt on some vacumes. Sometimes new vacumes come with a new belt. Look in the bag or box and install it.
Alot of times things get wound up on the brush roll ends and causes friction, the ends will overheat and melt, you just have to replace the brush roll(62365-2) and a new belt (61120A)while you are at it. Also check the slots where the brush sit in to make sure they didn't melt too, if so you would have to replace the base(62577).
On the top nozzle, there will usually is 2 screws holding the top done. There are slots or holes on each side near the front and the screws or in these holes. Remove them, remove the top cover and then you can get to the brush roll and belt.

Remove the base plate and remove the wheels and axle. Remove the hair and threads that was causing the wheel to lock up. You will need to use a box cutter or similar to remove the debris. Add a couple of drops of light machine oil and reassemble.

This can be because you need to adjust the tension or probably the pulley is no longer aligned. So find out if the shaft is no longer straight also if the belt requires tension.
