My LG 720P turns off by itself.
This is a problem with the power supply. If your out of warranty you have the choice of taking the t.v. in for repair and have the board replaced for $400 bucks or do some disassembling of your own and fix the power supply board yourself. The power supply will look similar to this
Check the capacitors for any bulging at the tops. they should be perfectly flat. Any bulging is a sign of a bad capacitor. LG uses Samxon capacitors on their boards. They will be smaller and green. rated 2200µF 10V. If replacing I suggest going to 2200µF 13-16V, so you don't run into the same problem. Where ever you take your board to get soldered should sell the capacitor. Or if soldering yourself check around online or call your local tv repair shops. It should only be 2-3 dollars.
Tv sound
Are you using an HDMI cable from your cable box to the TV? I found that the sound greatly improved and volume control was better after switched to an HDMI cable. Originally I was using component cables that were supplied by the cable company. Note: I bought my HDMI cable on line for $10. I've seen the same cable in the store for $35.
