I am trying to solve this problem right now. Ricoh says it is mostlikely a short in the print head which unfortunately means trash the printer. If your printer has a full ink collector you can reset it. go to www.conde.com and look at tech tips it is very simple.

You must get a service manual to even have a shot at repairing it. This sounds like a motor drive, sensor, problem?

SUBJECT: SC999 OCCURS
SYMPTOM:
An SC999 (Maintenance Stepper Motor Home Position Error) occurs.
CAUSE:
Some of the ink in the machine has dried, and as a result the maintenance stopper motor cannot rotate or
the levers come loose.
NOTE: The following conditions make it easy for the ink to dry up (See Appendix 3 for more details):
- Low humidity
- Long intervals between machine usage
- Total period of usage is long
- Low Print Volume

SOLUTION:
Production Countermeasure:
The shapes of some parts in the Maintenance Unit have been changed in two steps ("Step 1" and "Step 2"
below).
NOTE:
See Appendix 1 for the details of the Step 1 and Step 2 modifications.
See Appendix 2 for the visual differences among the unmodified unit, the Step 1-modified unit, and
Step 2-modified unit.
See UNITS AFFECTED for the Serial Number cut-in of Steps 1 and 2.
Field Countermeasure:
1. Cycle power OFF/ON.
2. Install one of the modified Maintenance Units ("Step 1" or "Step 2").
NOTE: For customers experiencing a SC999, have them contact 1-800 Ricoh38 for replacement.

Sounds like a dirty platen (that cylindrical roller thing). If you can get to it, use isopropyl alcohol on a rag.

this is a problem caused by the gel that is not supplied anymore in the printer. certainly the waste ink collector behing the machine is full. by replacing it i solved the problem sometimes, sometimes it is more serious ans the sparepart of the supply must be replaced by crafted man.hope it can help !

Well first of all you can try cleaning your printer heads using the operating system options -
Please follow the below steps -
1. In XP, click your Start button, then choose "Printers and Faxes" in the list. If it isn't there, go to your computer's Control Panel and click on "Printers and Other Hardware," and then "Printers and Faxes." (For Classic View, you can go straight to "Printer and Faxes" in your Control Panel.) Continue to Step 2.

In Vista, click Start button and Control Panel, then select Hardware and Sound » Printer. (For Classic View, just click "Printers.")
 
2. Highlight your printer by clicking it once, then right-click on the printer icon and choose "Properties." In the box that pops up, select the "Maintenance" tab at the top.
 
3. There are usually four options you can try here. They are listed as Cleaning, Deep Cleaning, Print Head Alignment, and Nozzle Check.

If your print-outs are showing lines, click Print Head Alignment and follow the instructions onscreen. Make sure the printer is turned on, with paper. You will compare the print-out with the one on your computer, and, hopefully, it will correct the problem. If not, try the alignment again.

If you're seeing too much of a particular color, like pink or green, this normally means your print head nozzles are clogged. Try the Cleaning option a couple times first, and then try the Deep Cleaning. Both will use ink, but the Deep Cleaning will consume the most.

When cleaning is done, click to print a Nozzle Check and compare it with the one on your screen.

After you replace the ink collector there is a counter you have to reset it to tell the printer that you are inserting a new collector

100% agreed with rrrdddrrrddd. In addition:
Go to Menu->System->INK CU Replace. You will get a warning that overflow may occur(and it's really a messy job), reset the counter and everything should be OK.

These cannot be refilled. You have to buy new ones each time. I would look into a new printer that has cheaper cartriges or use ink that can be filled. Sorry.

could be that the heads are blocked !! try to make the maintenance procedure head cleaning and head flushing from the printer or from the pc select the printer and go to the printing preferences and select maintenance and continue from there and try ,if it does nt solve the problem try to clean the head manually with a soft cloth or there are special cloths for the heads .
