How to erease pictures
The button with the picture of a garbage can is the delete button. Bring up the picture you want to delete and press that button...follow the on-screen instructions. If you want to erase the entire card, go into the menu and scroll to "format" and follow the on-screen instructions.
New battires in camera and it just goes on and off
It would help to know the model of the camera and exactly what you mean by on and off. Does it turn completely off and won't come back on, or does it just do a power save and turn back on as soon as you hit a button?

Remove the Battery from the Camera then press and hold the power button for 30 seconds. Then, reinsert the Battery pack and turn on the Camera and reset it to the original factory settings by selecting the "Initialize" option under Setup1.
If the issue persists then service will be required.
Just received it back from tec support saying fine
Hi you need to get the memory card a put it into your laptop and just put a few pictures on it, (it wont show on the camera when you view it) but after that put the memory card back into the camera and take a picture and you will be able to view it. i had the same problem, and just tried it now, and it works.

Powers up then shuts off. Lens is out.

There could be two problems:
1. Lens problem - stuck (damaged or sand / dirt inside the reductor and / or lens)
2. Faulty motherboard - happens to the Sony S series cameras.
I'm afraid you will have to give it away for a repair, you should contact your local Sony service center.
I work in a Sony service center and I know what I'm talking about.

Can not get dates to show up on photos
You can embed the date on image data when (Postcard) is selected. The
date will be printed on your images even if it has not been set at the
computer or printer.
* Ensure that the camera's date/time is set beforehand.
* Set the camera to a shooting mode (except (Stitch Assist) or Movie).
* Press the <DISPLAY> button so that icons show on the LCD screen.
1. Check that appears on the LCD monitor.
- If it does not, click here to view the procedure for changing the resolution.
2. Press the <MENU> button.
3. Select (Date Stamp) in the [ Rec.] menu using the or buttons.
4. Select [Off], [Date] or [Date & Time] using or .
5. Press the <MENU> button to exit the menu.
6. Shoot the image.
- The Date or Date & Time will be embedded into the actual image.
