Cannot connect device to computer

If you connect the device to the computer and then switch it on, the computer may not find your device. First turn on the GPS. Then connect it to your computer. This will solve the device detection problem.

I paid for a new up grade for U.S. Maps for my Tom

Tom do not seem to overwrite the existing map file. So before trying to install the map, you need to delete the folder that contains the map. (It is important to read the next part before you delete the map folder). Once you have connected your TomTom to the computer, close the TomTom home window. Double click on my computer. You will see the TomTom hard drive as a drive (like you see the CD drive). Double click on that . Once the folders of the TomTom hard drive opens, look for a folder named USA_Canada_and_Mexico_P. (Please note: this name is for American continent. For others, this name will be different). Right click on it. click properties. Check whether the size of this folder is approximately around 1.3 GB to 1.5 GB. This is just to make sure we have the correct folder. After confirming this is the map folder, copy this folder to your computer for back up purpose. Once you have it safely in your computer, delete this folder from the TomTom hardrive. Go back to TomTom homesoftware. Use the map guarantee to update/Upgrade the new map. You will see this time around the installation completes without a problem.

Wont turn on

Battery dead? Charge battery.
Doesn't work even plugged in AC-power? Take it to the dealer and tell them to repair/replace it (if under warranty).

After it is charge it will not turn on

the most common fault is that the battery is defective, they last about 2 years, less if they are run dead allot, longer if they are on the charger when not in use.

HOW TO REPLACE THE BATTERY FOR TOM TOM GO 720

Question i have to ask is 1- how much do you kno9w about electronics and 2- how brave are you. The following WILL void your warranty if you still have one.
READ ALL OF THIS BEFORE YOU EVEN START
1- Based on a poor picture of the unit that i found it looks like two screws in the back of the unit need to come out, might be four screws in there but pic only shows two.
2- With your small precision flat screwdriver push under the seam in the plastic and gently pry the two halves of the case apart, be careful as these units have snap taps under the plastic that you can't see till you get it apart.
3- DO NOT PULL ON THE TWO HALVES OF THE CASE YET. Look under the back of the case since the picture shows what looks like a button or a speaker in the back, this means wires running to something on the back half of the case, Look and see what it is and see if you can find the connectors to these things, should be small white connectors that you will have to GENTLY pull out of the connection bed.
4- Now that you have done that you should see something that looks like a cell phone battery, that's your prize, again look for the connector and gently remove from the connection.
5- replace with new battery and reverse order to install and reassemble your gps device. Hope this helps

Tom Tom 720 won't back up and falters during operations

You have to make a manual back up of the device. Make a new folder on your desk top. Connect your device to your PC and turn it on. Go to my computer and look for tom tom storage device and open it. You will see all the folders that is in your tom tom. Copy and paste just the yellow ones into the new folder. When you have done this you can know reformat your device. Do this by right clicking on the tom tom logo (in my computer). Click fat 32 (full format). This will wipe everything off. Disconnect your device, you will see a red cross on the screen. reset the device with a paper clip (hold in for 30 sec) You will still see the red cross. connect back up to PC and install the latest application of to tom home on to the device. From here you can go to add maps ect, and put your maps back on the device. Tom tom home will give you all the updates your device will be missing. You will only need the maps so don't worry if you can not copy all folders (for whatever reason) you can get everything you need as well as free updates for free via tom tom home. Its only the maps you have to pay for.
