start the computer and at the same time keep the delete button depressed until the bios screen comes up in one of the tabs you will find format the hard drive do that then go to oot tab and change boot sequence from hard drive to cd as first preference open the cd and insert the disc close down the computer then restart and it will boot from the cd

talk wit your IT repair shop it may require a new bigger motherboard to take the bigger cpu chip

This is a known bug on some Toshiba lappies - and one of the reasons I updated my A215 BIOS 4 times in the last few months!

Issue


The computer models listed above may display a "Password =" prompt when the computer is turned on, even though no power-on password has been set. If this happens, there is no password that will satisfy the password request. If the computer is turned off and back on again, it is very likely that the same password prompt will appear. The computer will be unusable until this problem is fixed.

If the problem has not happened yet, you can prevent it from happening in the future by upgrading the BIOS to the newest version.

The occurrence of this problem on any particular computer is unpredictable -- it may never happen, but it could happen any time that the computer is turned on. If this problem does occur, it will be necessary to send the computer to a Toshiba Authorized Service Provider, who will fix the problem at no charge to you.



Resolution


If this problem has not yet occurred on your computer, then click the following link to download and install BIOS version 1.40. This BIOS displays a power-on password prompt only when a power-on password has actually been set via the BIOS Setup program.

You may also browse for a newer version of the computer's BIOS at pcsupport.toshiba.com.

BTW, I've heard that this only happens when you boot up on battery power.

Well of course I do have to tell ya that downgrading from the original operating system which is Vista OS on your computer will cause alot of issues, Usually you will need to go to each and every manufactors website for each product and locate the driver yourself because every Computer Manufactor company will tell you that you should keep the windows operating system that came with the computer or they will not provide you any drivers, and they mean it, I tried downgrading from Vista OS to XP and had no drivers ... I would try going to the Wi-Fi adapter/card manufactors website and try to locate a driver. That is your bests bet Toshiba is not going to help any...especially if warrant is out of date...Let me know how it goes!

The chances is good that the hard drive is faulty when Windows says that. If that is the case you will need to replace the motherboard. But a motherboard can be expensive. In that case you can get rid of the laptop and rather buy a new one.

thank you for your response....I'm using Vista and the power seems to be on but the screen is down. I have to hold the power button down for 10 seconds to shut down then turn it back on to restore the computer. It is a Toshiba A215-S5818

Get a new harddrive and clone the old one before it fully fails.

My friend Im here to please. But if i was you you i wouldnt touch it. I have two. They are Buggers to put back together.

Your next step is to download the service manual from Toshiba. This will give you detailed instructions for disassembling your laptop. Luckily for you replacing the jack does not require soldering, it plugs in. The part can be found HERE for less than $5.00

you have to format your hard drive using a third party disc to erase everything on your hard drive

During the boot process you will see on the screen to press a certain key to enter setup

Press and hold that key during the boot up process to enter BIOS the scroll down to advanced bios features press enter change your first boot device to cd,press escape then press f10 to save to

cmos to restart

note this will erase you operating system you will have to have an operating system disk to load it onto you hard drive or create a partition to load another operating system

(note after you have loaded the operating system you must go back and change the first boot device to your hard drive)

The error S.M.A.R.T. refers to Hard Drive hard drive that has detected damage to the disk and failure of the drive is imminent.

If the computer is booting to Windows after the SMART error, then back up all data on the disk immediately. The hard drive will need to be replaced to resolve this issue.

Also, I suggest that you start the Computer to BIOS and check whether the Hard Drive is detected in BIOS.

If the Hard Drive is detected in BIOS, then try to perform reinstalling Windows supplied in your computer once before getting the hard drive replaced.
