At first install the Device/Firmware Manager software on your PC and connect your device. If the PC doesn't recognize the item it would be the best that make firmware update.

Run a Repair using the Philips Device Manager.
Actually, I'm not sure if I understand what you are asking - if you are getting a format error on the songs that you have loaded onto the player, then the songs are in the wrong format.
Without getting into long, boring explanations, if you download only files that are in true Mp3 format, then you won't have any format errors. WMA files are very iffy with most mp3 players. iTunes files are completely incompatible with this player.
