does it blue screen & say dumping memory, then count down to ZERO. or just switch off then restart with the fans blasting for a couple of seconds? does it bleep @ any point? if so in what pattern?

this problem often is fatal.. you could either try changing the IDE cable or the hardisk itself.. if you have spares.. but IDE type is not manufactured already..

What model Dell?

Most all computers make sounds. Can you be more specific? Thanks. Do any lights on the case turn on? How many sounds does it make? Are the sounds close together?

Where does the sound seem to be coming from? If the sound is coming from the rear (rear fan), it might be the power supply. If the sound is coming from the inside of the computer, the problem might be another fan on the inside (such as the CPU fan). If that is the case, then usually the computer will turn on for a short time and then cut off. When this happens, the computer when on, overheats and then shuts off. Hope this helps! Does it say what program it is waiting to close? Generally this window will tell you what is not closing properly. It could be that one of your programs could just be running behind, but it could also be malware or a virus slowing down the shutdown process. We need to pinpoint what is not shutting down properly.
