The lamp in this scanner is a CCFL tube one - it never dies. What dies is the power source that generates its high voltage. But a defect in the power source would have not allow a scan to start so it's not your problem.
Most likely is a paper movement problem - the scan starts, the paper is pulled in and it jams so the scan is cancelled. This is a known problem and Visioneer sells the required paper guide that fails

But if you have indeed tube problems then you must take out the bottom of the scanner to access the power board and test it. But i must warn you - there are no replacement parts so either you fix it yourself or it's dead.

Have you upgraded to newer version of windows? Have you tried reinstalling Paperport? (back up max files 1st) I have had a visioneer and still use Paperport 8. Often I have problems with Windows 8 and reinstall paperport now and then.
