PNY Optima 1GB PC2-5300 DDR2 SoDIMM Notebook Memory Questions & Answers
I just put in2gb of mem but only read one gb
normal PNY issue, find your receipt and contact pny's rma department, ship it off with RMA number and get a replacement,, the only thing pny is a stickler for is the receipt to prove your original ownership as they don't allow second hand warrenty.. but who's to say who's receipt it is... there is no FIX for this, the ram is notorious for going bad
Format problem
Do not format the card, try photo recovery software to rescue the lost photos, here are some you may rely on. Both programs can also recover videos and music.
Photo Recovery Software (for Windows)
Mac Photo Recovery Software (for Mac OS X)
Be careful: Before your pictures are recovered, do not attempt to save more files to the SD card in case the original files(your pictures) are overwritten.

I'm afraid it has to do with Apple's firmware on iMacs. A compatible 3rd party memory dealer is RAMJET.
From their website, you can see:
Apple Computers have proven too demanding for generic PC memory modules. Apple users have been forced to either pay Apple's high prices for upgrades, or buy 3rd party modules and be subjected to system crashes, boot failures, and sub-par performance. Worse still, most 3rd party vendors had no idea that Apple machines demanded a higher standard.
At Ramjet, we start with modules built 100% to Apple's original specifications, but we don't stop there. In our compatibility center, we have a comprehensive array of Apples, every platform built since 1996. Other memory companies try to test for Apple compatibility using generic RAM module testers, whereas we test our RAM in the same Mac you're upgrading.
Poor Warranty
I'm not sure which company you ordered from. I have always recommended EVGA due to they outstanding customer support and LIFETIME
Installation cd
go right to their website and download the appropriate driver/software and install it from your computer instead of the cd. incidentally, remove the cd from the drive and inspect the working side... the shiny side and see if it has any smudges or scratches. the cd player may not be able to read it.
it's not mentioned but is that a pc or mac and what operating system are you using ?
