Reinstalling xp will not take my product key
If you are reinstalling Windows XP from a NON-DELL disc, and trying to use the Dell OEM product key, it will not work.
OEM versions of Windows have a modified precopy2.cab and a retail version of XP will not validate the OED product key from the chassis. This is because the OEM media for Dell has a precopy2.cab that pre-loads the product key when the system is BOOTED to the OEM media (It also pre-activates the OS)
Your choices at the point are:
- Re-install the OS from a Dell OEM CD (They can be purchased on EBay for around $20, and only work on Dell Systems)
- Purchase a valid Retail Key from Microsoft

Hello,
the only recommended way at this stage is to loose the CD Rom with a screw driver. I have done this couple of times when I was trying to fix my CD Rom.
Get a screw driver and unscrew the screws from the under of the drive so that the up cover can be removed and you can gain access into the CD Rom thereby enabling you to remove the disc inside.
If the drive is difficult for you to loose, I would advice that you study it well because its loose able, just give it some more effort and you will eventually succeed in loosing the CD Rom cover.
As for the repairs, its rear for CD Rom in a condition like this to be repaired, therefore, I would advice that you get another one.
The CD Rom for my laptop just stopped working for no reason and I loosed it and did all I could, but but no avail. I still ended up getting another CD drive.
I wish you the best of luck.
Take care.

Hello,
Thanks for using FixYa.
You need to take out the optical drive and open it up to recover the CD that you need out. You also need to replace the optical drive because it already reached its end of life (gears inside are already bad). If you have knowledge in taking out the optical drive from your laptop then that's good. If not you can try to take out the screws under the laptop that holds the optical drive in place. Pull the release latch and you should be able to take it out. If you are having problems trying to do this. Just buy yourself a replacement for the optical drive and Im sure that the shop that you bought it from will be more than happy to replace the drive themselves. It will take no more than 5 minutes to do this. After they take out the optical drive. You can probably start being a surgeon and take out all the screws from the optical drive and take out parts piece by piece until you get your CD out. Warning, its really fun to be a computer part surgeon, just don't try it on your new optical drive... hehehe, cheers!
I hope this helps. Happy new year! or happy new decade rather! =)

My CDROM drive is stuck and doesn't open, how
Hi jameelahn,
Your going to need a very technical tool to fix this. Get a paperclip and straighten it out so you have about 2". Near the CD-ROM push button, you'll see a tiny hole that only a paperclip size pin will fit. Gently, put the paperclip into the hole, and gently push until the drive opens up.
To repair the drive, you will need to tell me what is wrong with it.
Thanks Mark

Dell inspron 8100 laptap with windows xp
Try booting with your windows xp installation cd in the drive. See if it will give you a repair or restore option when doing this. If it does not then it's possible your computer has a virus. You can check this by booting up with your anti virus cd in the drive and let it do a system scan. Hope this helps & please remember to rate my answer. Thanks.

NO PC told (dell has 10000 models)
no OS told, windows what"?
no drive told.
my wild wild guess is the boot drive is locked.
and you are attempting and ******* act. to it.
like deleting key parts of a running OS (windows) (like deleted tires on rims of 85mph moving car, fails)
no real goal told, but the nebular "install HDD"
one can add a 2nd drive easy or any of 1000s of external HDD models or external or internal, SSD or even a thumb drive. (vast) (just 2 steps in fact)
but the boot drive , change out is far far far more complex. and you never not told that.
you want to mess with the C: drive?
now let me guess the real goal (sad I must)
the OS drive windows is failing ( common)
and some lil' bird told you it needs a new boot drive, and then fail to say so here.
okay I will bite.
1: buy a new SSD (hdd fail and are slow)
2: buy a new OS, from MS. or get free w10. (ask how)
3: then put in new SSD,
4: run the w10 installer media (it is free)
5: load w10 to the SSD fresh
6: answer the silly 30 questions it asks.
7: and click activate. (buy it)
..
